My employer is making me come to work during hurricane?
Hurricane Dolly is about to hit us early Wednesday morning. I work for a major company with many branches in the US. My boss told me that our headquarters are making us work Wedesday. He said when we get to work then we will find out if we stay or go home. Okay, but we will start seeing the effects of the hurricane in the dawn hours, and I have to travel 15 miles where I can encounter down power lines or flooding. Im basically putting my life at risk. If I call my boss tomorrow morning, and everything is bad, and I don't feel safe driving to work, can I get terminated?? I think my employer is taking this hurricane too lightly by acting reactive than proactive. I don't want to get fired, but I dont want to risk my life either.

I understand your concern. I am forced to make the same choice every year during one of our lovely ice storms. The fact is that it is dangerous. It will be raining heavy, things will be flying around and I know even trying to drive in heavy rain alone is difficult sometimes. I think that wednesday morning you should get up a little earlier than normal to give yourself time to make it to work as if were a normal day, just in case it's just rain etc. If you feel like you could make it, in that type of weather go. If conditions just seem to dangerous to you, call in. I am sure you wouldn't be the only one doing so, and surley they arent going to fire a bunch of people for protecting your own lives. And if they did fire you for it, then you really dont want a job that doesnt care if you get killed or not. You can tell your boss it isnt the military and you didnt sign up to die for the company. I call in at least 2 or 3 times every winter because of the ice, and my boss gets peeved but has never fired me yet. Just be ready to go to work in the morning and then play it by ear. Trust your gut on these sort of things. Good luck, and stay safe!

i'm from Brownsville so we are getting a direct hit..The truth, I would not go to work..He shouldnt be forcing you to go and a time like this...Maybe it's just that he doesnt want to be alone..Stay home and if he happens to fire you..you have every reason to dispute it..Stay home and enjoy the storm..Just pretend you dont even work tomorrow..We are supposed to get the first outskirts around 3 or 4 in the morning..maybe even earlier and then around 9-12..its supposed to make a direct landfall..I would not risk it..your life is wayyyy more important than that...Good Luck Sweetie and I hope you make the wise choice

No they cannot fire you due to this problem, just like if you were to call in sick (even tho you weren't) ... I had to same problem last year. We were hit with 11 inches of snow, and we couldnt get out the front door. I live in Canada and my boss lives in the US, so how could he know what was going on. But I couldn't get into work, and I didn't - the store did not open that day, sales were lost but my life and safety was not. They cannot legally make you work. That is an injustice.

Amber
He can't fire you.
Tell him you have a long commute to work.
Say you can't take that risk.

If he fires you you can find a legal reason to sue him. Especially if the Hurricane does hit hard.

Just take a sick day. Or let him know the real reaso, apologize but explain your reason while being respectful.

If you don't feel safe, call in and say you're sick. They can't fire you for that. I had to go to work and stay for days when Hurricane Charlie hit a few years ago, because everyone else had called in with excuses and they had no staff. (nursing home)

From the guys at HR: They will not fire you if the weather is so bad that the local waether service has issued a warning asking you not to travel. It happens all the time with snow storms, hurricanes, etc.

Just call in and say you can't make it in as the weather is too bad to make it into work. If they threaten to fire you, remain calm and refuse to discuss over the phone.

Talk to HR on Thursday and express your disappointment in the conduct of you boss. If they push the issue, report them to the state employment service.

You will not be the only one to miss work on Wednesday.

I feel ya. I had to come to work during an Ice storm a few years ago.. I fell and hurt my back on the bank parking lot. As did other people. There were quite a few workers comp claims filed. I think they learned their lesson. Either way, I do not risk my life to come to work anymore.

I'm sorry you have to go through that. I live in Miami and at the company I work for it's company policy that once we are under a "Hurricane Warning" - not a "hurricane watch", but a WARNING, then that means autimatically we get to leave work or not come in. The company is a national company and we get criticized from people in other areas of the country when we are not available because "it's just a storm". People don't realize it's a big deal and it's not just a little storm - you have to go home and take the time to prepare your home for the high winds, etc. I think that's a pretty common policy - for companies to allows employers to leave at a Hurricane Warning - I would offer your boss to just take leave without pay for a day. It's not worth it to drive in that, or just call in the morning and say that your road is flooded or a tree is down across your driveway and you can't leave your home. :)

Edit: Remember how hurricanes work - when it "hits" just means when the eye comes onshore, which can be relatively calm. The worst part of the storm is located in the eyewall, which is the heavy rains/winds that come before and after the storm comes onshore. Please stay safe - you should not be driving!!

Museum Misfit
Ummm, No. Say, "Umm, my job isn't worth my life. Thanks. I'll be at home if this thing appears to be a threat before I even leave. Will you pay for a hotel if it does become a threat and I am at work?"

*EDIT*
Sorry, an underground shelter? not hotel... I wouldn't do it.. do you not have labor laws?

paintedhorse30
I live in FL and have had to do this before. According to the news, the hurricane is suppose to make landfall around 9am, just go to work early, you should be safe then. If the hurricane happens to hit earlier, just call your boss in the morning I doubt he will make you drive through it then.

Employers as a general rule don't give a damn about employees.

Janie K
i think you should call him in the morning and express your concerns.....just explain everything you just wrote. I'm sure you wont get fired if you are able to speak w/ him..I've never been in a hurricane but it sounds like a scary situation and i dont think i would want to drive during a high risk period. Hopefully he will realize how dangerious it is and will let you miss work.

Be safe tomorrow!

Just follow the news before you fall asleep and then right before you have to go to work. Its only a Category 1 (barely) so you may be over worrying.

Just watch the news Wednesday morning and follow your intuition.

It is barely a hurricane, but it is still a hurricane. I went through Hurricane Isabel in 2003. By the time it got to Richmond it was a Category 1 hurricane but it was still dangerous to drive during the height of the storm. I wouldnt go to work if things are bad when you wake up. You should have personal time to use. Things better be bad though. Dont use it as an excuse not to go to work.
