He needs to go to a doctor. There are great medications now that can help him with his problem without making him feel sluggish or drugged out. There are also great treatments one can use in conjunction with medication - "cognitive behavior therapy" is one of the names for it.
As far as I know, there is absolutely nothing you can do to help him; it's going to take one or more experts. You both need to understand that he has a responsibility to you, your children, and himself (perhaps most of all), to get the help he needs, and to get it as soon as possible.
Some behavior of this kind can have a genetic component; it is possible that your children will develop OC symptoms. If your husband is resistant to getting help, what kind of example would that set for your children? Is one to think, by extension, that he wouldn't approve of their getting the help they need?
Reason with him the best you can; give him an ultimatum if you have to. If you have a community of close family and friends who can support you, an intervention is something you might consider.
[Medications evolve & improve. The kinds of meds he might have had to take as a child may not be anything like the ones that are available to him now. And resenting what other people made him do in the past isn't a mature way to approach a current problem. He has to take charge of his own life now, of course; but "because he had to do it" is no reason NOT to try approaching the medical solution from an informed position. It may be the only way not to continue to cause himself, you, and your children unnecessary pain. To paraphrase a famous song, He may not be able to get what he wants, but if he tries, he may get what he needs.] |

Try not to take it so seriously. Meaning, dont think that he's doing it on purpose. He's not. He's not out to drive you insane. Its just a part of him. There are probably other lil annoying things about him that you have "learned to love". Try the same method with his OCD. |

He might have Asperger's syndrome a mild form of autism. Many have had it, Thomas Jefferson, Einstein etc. Very common disorder. OCD is a common element from it.
A person can actually rewire their brain so to speak to work around OCD. Just like people who stutter learn to use an alternate word when the "stutter" word is coming. There are resources on it. |

Tell him how you feel and tell him that you are going to need him to see a doctor, that it is causing problems in your marriage and his relationship with his kids. Tell him that you are going to have to leave if he can't see that he needs help. Sometimes people need to be threatened. Tell him the reason you want him to see a doctor is because you care, and because you want him to live a happey fulfilling life. You don't want him to suffer with OCD forever. |

He needs to see a doctor. Why doesn't he want to go to a doctor? Does he not believe he has OCD? If this is the case, the first thing you have to do is get him to admit it. Once he realizes that he has something that is treatable, maybe he'll be more amenable to going to the doctor. |

My husband felt the way you did and finally convinced me to see a doc. How did he do it?? He made me feel like going to the doc would do nothing but benefit me...it wasnt for him it was for me. I'm on Zoloft now...and tho there are still rituals I do...I'm much more at peace and I can sleep at night. If your hubby is anything like me....his OCD doesnt bother him...mine didnt bother me...but it drove everyone around me crazy hehe. Good luck with this. And tell him that with some people who have OCD...they dont know 'peace' until they get help...they dont even realize how anxious and stressed they are. And how anxious and stressed they make everyone around them. Good luck |

Keep assuring him that you love him and that you are still his wife! I know it is very hard and stressful for you! The best way I think to get through this is to find a way to channel your feelings. Something that makes you relax: going to the gym, swimming classes, pilates, reading, writing...etc. I would also encourage you to find a local support group. There are groups(community and church sponsored) for love ones that live with someone who has OCD. This can be an opportunity for you to find others like you that can relate to the stresses you are dealing with on a daily basis. You may be able to make a friend that you can keep in contact with to just be able to pick up the phone and vent.
His reluctancy to go to the Doctor is an issue! I would really try to be as annoying as possible until he goes. LOL
Remind him everyday that he should see a Doctor. Maybe even 2 times a day. This could help him a lot! There are options available now that could make life more bareable for him, you, and your family.
I realize that it is not easy, but I hope that what I mentioned helps. I wish you the best! |
