Jake Bananna | My son wants to see where beef comes from? My wife is angry. Why? |
I want to take my son to a slaughterhouse to witness the killing floor to see where our meat comes from. My wife is angry and says I am out of my mind. I want him to see how other creatures suffer to serve man.
With that said, I figured I would make it a party as he is turning 5. should I go to macdonalds before or after?
Ps, family raises beef, highland scottish cattle. |

Just before I turned five, my Dad took me to the slaughter house. He had me wait in the van for a bit, then said I could get out and go look at the cows.
I asked him why I'd had to wait before seeing the cows and he explained they'd been about to kill the pigs inside and he didn't think I'd have liked that.
Forty five years later, I still view that as a golden oppertunity missed. At that age my mind was building itself on experiences. I just accepted what was what and only questioned out of curiosity. So they killed the pigs? Fine. Only I'd have been fascinated to have learned, by experiencing it, how. My Dad explained, but it's not the same as seeing the whole deal for yeself, I'm sure.
I'd say the child can form a more rounded opinion by seeing than by listening to either of your verbal explanations.
Hey; Take the kid for the kid who never got to see! ;-) |

I think he is too young to witness the slaughter of innocent animals regardless if it's a family business. You can just explain to him where his beef comes from without showing him till he is a little more older in age.You might end up terrorising him to the point he will never eat meat again and have nothing to do with the Family's business. After you tell him (not showing) let him decided if your going to MacDonald's for lunch. And don't think the other parents would allow you to take their children who is apart of that birthday party to a slaughterhouse to butcher some cows.I've seen movie images on the internet showing the slaughter of innocent animals and I can tell you it made me sick to my stomach. And I don't eat meat anymore. It is a living creature that feels pain when it dies just like a human. He should just have a regular birthday party with cake, ice cream and gifts.Just what a birthday boy should remember on his 5th birthday. Not the slaughter of cows. |

A 5 year old child is too young to experience this. I grew up on a farm, but was not exposed to slaughtering animals until I was older. Even then, it was too much.
I agree that children can be told (a milder version) of animals being killed to serve man, but you need to understand what is age appropriate. It's enough at this age to say that animals are killed to serve man and that sometimes the methods used can be cruel. When he gets older (say 8-10) you might tell him more about the methods used, but even that is too young to visit a slaughterhouse. Listen to your wife on this one. You don't want to do something cruel to your child just so he can learn how cruel man can be. |

i would hold off on the whole slaughter house for a while... try takin him to the zoo if u want to show him animals. then in a couple years and he still asks then take him but at the age of 5 i dont think he will understand and he would be freaked out. |
