My stepdad works at the ship yard, my mom is a secretary, what's our income?
i don't want to ask them how much money they make a year, but i want to apply to a private school and it says it's free for families who make less than $75,000 a year.
my stepdad is one of the big bosses at a navel shipyard, so he does make a lot of money (but we're not rich) and my mom is a secretary at a doctor's office but she has her own office and recently got her college degree.

see, i have no idea what kind of jobs make what kind of money, so i thought i'd ask here to see if you could make a rough estimate.

thank you!

Easy! This depends on the city but I'm pretty sure about this:

You father makes over $100,000 a year.
Your mom makes $65,000 a year.

So, your family probably pulls in $200,000 gross (with stock options, investments, and inheritence).

They probably net about 72% of that so: $130,000.

So, you're doing pretty well. Also, they didn't tell you this but they've been saving for your college since you were 5 and have almost $240,000 dedicated to that. Also, they have at least 3 Roth IRA's worth a cool million (bet you didn't know that either).

So, you basically have no worries other than scoring high enough on your SAT to actually get into a college (which seems to be in doubt since you can't seem to figure a way to find out how much your parents are worth - did you ever think of checking your bank statements? I mean they have them all in a box in your Mom's office).

I would suggest talking to them about it. They're not going to be mad that you're looking at options for your education.

chadchadbinks
This is something no one but your parents and their employers know. It's something you need to ask them.

rtfm
Just tell them you want to apply to this school, explain that it's free for families that earn less than $75K, and ask them if your family qualifies.

We can't possibly tell. Only your parents know how much they earn.

You need to just ask them. Don't be shy about it. Tell them what its for and tell them that if they make less than $75,000 than you get to go for free. If you lie on the application you could get in really big trouble. PLUS the school WILL ask for copies of your parents income tax papers for proof.

It's really impossible to tell...anyone who has offered you any numbers is really just guessing, and probably has information that is biased due to their location. For example, the answerer who suggested that a Secretary makes $65,000 a year might be accurate for someone working in California, but it's definitely not true for someone working in Mississippi. Different geographies have different pay ranges.

The website below can give you a good educated guess, but until you actually ask your parents, you won't know the truth.

The best thing for you to do is just ask because wages vary. just be like (step dad) do you make over x amount of money. he will not get mad at you if you tell him why you asked! Or if you can find there tax records they say how much person makes on the tax record your probably going to need tax records to get in to the school any way, to prove house hold income.

I think you'll be better off asking them. Just explain what it's for. It's for your education anyway, I'm sure it won't hurt.

Well... My mom works in medical records and my dad works in a machine shop and they make like 60,000 so your parents probably make like double that at least :p. But you should really be talking it over with them.

I reckon their combined income is probably in the region of $100,000 to $150,000 a year.

Walter J
I would bet that your parents' combined income exceeds $75,000 per year.

I would estimate that combined they bring in around $115,000 a year.

Henry The Dog
It's way over $75k.

obviously less than $75,000 :(
