O man this is scary! how do i prevent it from happening?
ok i have this heated blanket that my parents bought for me and it scares me that it is going to set on fire....s this possible and if so how can i prevent it from happening
i know i have to turn it off befor i fall asleep and all but i am still afraid that i might forget to turn it of and burn the house down of somthing bad like that

It has happened. But, it has only happened with very old blankets where the wires have been worn. If the blanket is new, you can safely use it for years. An easy way to tell, turn off the lights and move the blanket around. If you see little lights (sparks) inside the blanket, it's time to get a new one.

Ive heard it said before but I don't think that they get hot enough to catch fire

Just don't use it on your bed. Use it for snuggling on the sofa and what-not, but I wouldn't risk it. Unless it has an auto-shut-off. OR use it to warm your bed for a while before you climb in, then turn it off before you lie down.

Personally, I LOVE a cold bed...nice cool sheets, nothing better. :)

Well i wouldnt think that the blanket could do that-i would think that there are regulations that have to be followed when they make an electric blanket. I know people who have them and sleep with them every night, and nothing bad has ever happened. Think of it like this: how hot do you turn it on? Have you ever accidently left a stove burner on-well i have and nothing happened with that and thats alot hotter than an electric blanket.

I have had many electric blankets that I leave on while sleeping and even forget to turn off sometimes. I usually remember later that day that its still on or when I hear it click (for the older versions). I have never set anything on fire with them. Just don't put the darn thing on HI and forget, do a middle or a low setting.

Dee
I loooove my electric blanket! Mine has an auto shut-off in case I forget. Check yours because I think most do nowadays.

Make sure you put the blanket on the very top. Don't put any other blankets on top of it (only below it). You should be fine - they are made safe.

You will feel the burn first, so I doubt you should be too worried about your house...

WHODEY
I think they're supposed to be safe, but I don't use them anymore. I used to, one night I shook it (gently) to straighten it out (it was on) and I saw sparks fly. I was so scared of starting a fire that I've never again used one. I say, switch to flannel sheets and get one of those velvety blankets.

well only use it when it is extremly cold

Melanie
i seriosuly doubt that it would happen. the companies that make heated blankets have to protect against that kind of **** from happening. my mother goes to bed every night with a heating pad because of her bad back and (knock on wood) the house is still standing. im sure you'll be fine. if youre really that paranoid than set an alarm to wake you up so that you turn it off.
