I always think that if for some reason, someone you don't know is going out of his or her way to spread vicious rumors about you, you must either be quite popular, or pretty, or clever. Or, someone that person secretly or publicly likes, made a nice comment about you. Or it could be someone you inadvertently snubbed.
People who do this usually have low self-esteem already, they are constantly criticising themselves in the back of their head, and many of them don't even know it. So, when they meet up with someone who is loads better than themselves, sometimes it is only apparent to them, or has someone see through their pretensions, their self-loathing is exposed and the only way they can avoid having to deal with their own self-hate, is to throw mud onto someobody else. That way, they can point at the 'mud' on the other person and hope that their 'mud' will go un-noticed.
If the rumors are particularly vicious, then a confrontation may not help, as you will be dealing with a lot of hatred, and this means a higher chance of it blowing up in your face. Explain to your friends that these are just rumors, have them help you to spread the facts about you. Be friendlier, nicer, show others that the real you is different. Show courage in weathering this, and you may gain more respect, and perhaps get more friends, at the end of it.

It's horrible when people talk about you behind their back. It's so rude. However, you say that you hardly know these people. Have you tried to get to know them? Maybe they are saying your a stuck up snob because they think your under the impression that your too good to be seen talking to them. Try to talk to them and hang out with them. Show that your not a stuck up snob and that you like to talk to everyone.
give it a go. If they don't want to know then thats their problem and you shouldn't care what they say because you made an effort.

I used to have the same problem, people would think i was stuck up and they wouldn't want to talk to me or mix with me. it would really hurt me because i wasn't stuck up at all. in fact my real problem was that i was very very shy and was finding it difficult to mix with people. that might be the case with you aswell. or maybe they are just jelous of you coz you might be better than them in some way or they want to be like you. best is to ignore them. have you heard the saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." |
