No it's not fair, we are in another time period and in my opinion I think there are more negative things going on these days than say 40 or 50 years ago so it's harder to be a young person now and older people can't always see it that way. |

That's been a problem all along. Guaranteed, you'll do it to teenagers when *you* get old! |

I'm 45 and yes, I sometimes catch myself saying, "I would never have done something like that when I as a teen." But then I realize that I really did do alot of wild, crazy and very stupid things. Somehow we just seem to forget all that. We just don't want today's teens to repeat our mistakes.
Today's teen generation is truly are growing up in a different world than we did when we were kids, so comparisons do run thin pretty quickly. It's not fair to say things are the same.
On the other hand, please listen to your parents and elders. They love you and care about you. They just want to see life turn out great for you and let you benefit from the knowledge they have from the mistakes they may have made. |

It's not fair if they use their teenage years as a basis as to what teenagers should be like now. Times change. |

Depends on the categories for comparison. If the comparison is based on simple values, it's a valid comparison. For example, comparisons between then and now as regards: work ethic, average graduation rates, self-respect, respect for others (especially persons with authority), drug abuse rates, pregnancy rates, etc. are all valid.
If they are saying, "the kids today couldn't tell a 45 rpm record from a floppy disc" then, it's not fair. |

I've heard that when people compare to what teens were like 'in their day' they often compare teens now to the GOOD memories they had back then.
Having heard stories from various times in the past I've concluded that most teens were smegheads ANY TIME between NOW and THE BIG BANG. Teens have done horrible things over the many years that the concept has been around, even way back in ye good olde days.
If I were to compare - say - the Best teens from now and the Best teens from 80 years ago there might not be much difference at all. Aside from specific skillz.
Find out what REALLY happened when people were teens way back when, you'd be horrified at some of the goings on. Read "Unreliable Memoirs" by Clive James for just a tiny hint.
I don't think it's fair comparing anyway - like people have said the world is a differnet place now. |

I don't think that it is necessarily fair that older people like in their 40's or 50's compare teenagers to when they where teens because the way the world works now is totally different from the 1960's. However I do think that it is fair for people in their 20's to compare teenagers to when they where teens considering they where teens less then a decade ago. Not very many things have changed in the last ten years. |
