Online office? I recieved a check for $2,800 and I dont know what to do?
On Jan 24th 2008 i received an email about an this company called online office. I'm a little strapped for cash so i thought "why not" i could use some extra cash. Aside from this i received a check in the mail for approx. $2,800 payed to the order to my name coming from wachovia bank. I'm nervous about this because i believe it came from that online office website that i was offered saying that you get 8% of the check amount. I don't know what i should do with the check because i'm not in the mood to spend my days behind bars lol it seems like money laundering but what should i do with the check?????

take it to a wachovia bank and explain how the check got to you and if it was a legitimate check. I wouldn't trust any "online office" to begin with, go to there site find a contact number and speak with someone to explain the check and ask wht they expect from you

J_Burnette
It sounds like a scam. Most scams like this send you money they they say you must immediately send back out. Then after you send it out, you realize the check they sent you bounced. If the check they sent you was drawn on a Wachovia bank, then I would suggest going there or calling them and verifying the funds.

PiggiePants
The check is counterfeit - you will deposit it, take out the money, and when the bank discovers the check is fake, you will have to repay the money, which you no longer have.

See the Federal Trade Advisory "Giving the Bounce to Counterfeit Check Scams" at their official web site:

Tear it up, it's a scam. If you deposit it and spend the money, eventually what'll happen is the check will be flagged as NSF and the entire amount will be withdrawn from your account, and you'll be negative that amount and responsible for paying back your bank.

eduardomchl
I wouldn't cash it in at all. It's probably a scam.

digduck
dont cash it its fake..

they get ur account number and then ur totally screwed

SCAM!!!!!

Seriously, do not deposit this check. Contact your local police department, tell them everything, show them the check and let them take it from there.

I would say be very very careful. I've worked in the banking industry for over 7 years and on line email scams are extremely common. If you don't know the people that are giving you money, or you don't know exactly why you are getting the money I would say be very cautious. Plus, what did they mean you would be getting 8% of the check amount. The best bet is to assume that all unsolicated stuff sent to your email is not legit and you shouldn't take seriously. I have seen many many people get fooled, and get screwed. Look at the check very well, look for watermarks, fibers, make sure everything that is supposted to be capitalized IS (like it doesn't say houston instead of Houston). You could also call Wachovia and tell them a little bit and you can give them the routing number from the check and they can tell you over the phone usually if it's a good number. Just be honest with them and tell them exactly what you told us, and they will help you. Well, at least that's how it works at the 2 banks I've worked at. Sorry for rambling on and on....

um, that might be a scam. Take it to the bank and have them check it out before trying to put it in your account, they can tell you if its legit or not, just tell them the online office place you signed up for online sent it to you & they can find out forsure.

jmyersmccullough
Ask your local bank to verify the check for you, before they cash it.

I don't blame you for being nervous. I recently read about people being scammed just like this, where they end up losing the amount of the check value. The suggestion was to take it to the post office and have the postal inspector have a look. That way, you're covered.

I received the same. I googled "Transfer Agent". Check this article out, it explains the whole game. Read the link in the article to "Mule" also. Wow, not something I want to be caught up in.

I don't understand. Does it say you get 8% of $2,800.00? Or is the entire $2,800.00 for you? If you are not sure, I would not put the check in your account. Go directly to Wachovia and cash it. If part of the deal is that you are supposed to deposit the cash and write another check to someone else, then it is a scam.

iF YOU CASH THE CHECK, THEY WILL COM AFTER YOU FOR FRAOUD
