This publishing company called me today and offered me 6 different magazines, all i have to do is pay for one of them.
Well I gave them my credit card number over the phone. Turns out that I have to pay $79.73 a month for 12 months for these magazines.
Now I have a one month old and am trying to go back to school so you might imagine that I can not afford $80 a month for a year.
I tried calling the number back to cancel but theres no answer. If they did answer it just beeped and ended the call.
Is there anything I can do to cancel this?
My grandma told me there is a law that allows a person 3 days to change their mind when purchasing something over $50, is that true? If so how would I cancel if they dont answer?
How do I prevent more of these publishing companies from calling me?
I appreciate any help.

You need to contact your Credit Card company and explain this. They will reverse the charges as you have rights with your credit card company, especially if you can't contact the people who did this.
Also, NEVER buy anything from someone who calls you!! 99% of the time it's something you don't need and are pressued in to buying just because you don't want to say no!
If anything sounds to good to be true, it usually is! And once they get your credit card number, they can do anything they want! A good rule of thumb, is NEVER give your card info over the phone, unless you know who you are giving it to!
A good line to use is this:
"I would love to discuss your offer more, but I am very pressed for time, can I have your home phone number and I will call you later?"
They will probably hang up because they don't want to be bothered at home, just like you did'nt when they called! |

Dispute the CC charge a.s.a.p. if they didn't state the terms clearly and correctly. It is up to the business to prove that they did. Most scams won't bother.
I would also watch my credit report VERY carefully, if not cancel that card and get a replacement.
To avoid this in the future, add yourself to the no call list, and if they continue, just say "Hang on a sec" and come back to the phone 15 minutes later. |

call the credit card company and have them put a block on that vendor, so your card isn't charged again. then when they call the following month to see why your card wont go though, tell you want to cancel because the price and terms were not clear. next time don't order anything through the phone, especially when they contact you first.
i'm sorry but i am so curious, what time would you have between the baby, work and school to read 6 mags a month? |

Call your credit card company, and ask them if they can do a stop payment on it, because you weren't told the details of how much you'd be paying, otherwise you wouldn't have done it in the first place.
I would continue trying to reach that company as well. If they have any sense of decency, they'll pick up. Otherwise report them to the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
If your local news stations have a consumer complaint division (where you call them, and they do some investigative work for you to try and help you get your money back from scams or otherwise bad business deals), give them a call and let them know the situation. They may be able to help you (I saw this on my local news station once, and the lady was able to get her money back).
As for not getting calls, try this site: https://www.donotcall.gov/
Should you still end up getting calls from telemarketers, do the harsh thing when you get a call, hang up on them. Yes, I realize they're just trying to do their job, but I'm sure you don't want to pay $80 for a magazine subscription either.
Btw, what that company is doing isn't illegal, but they largely prey on people who don't know better. You can subscribe to those magazines much, much, much cheaper yourself (heck, virtually every magazine nowadays has at least 10 subscription cards in them, which is the first thing I throw away when I get one lol).

Call your credit card company RIGHT AWAY and request that they deny any payment to that company.
You may need to get your credit card number changed--because next month they will try and put a charge through again. It costs nothing to have your card number changed. |

Even is there is a law, they are probably NOT a real company and will not give you arefund.
Did you get the name of the company that called you?
If you did, call their Customer Serivce Office and ask to speak with a Supervisor and cancel your orders. Tell your parents what ou did.
You will be paying for MORE than one magazine. You could be paying for a lot of magazines.
Put your telephone number on the National Do Not Call listing.
donotcall.gov, it should stop the phone calls. |

I am not sure with your grandmother's comment. Contact your CC company immediately and let them know your situation. Many CC companies, like American Express, will reimburst your payments and deal with the merchant directly. Give it a shot. |

Im sorry to say but if they arent answering the phone, it sounds like a scam,,,,dont EVER give a credit card number over the phone unless you are sure you know who it is.... |

Call your bank immediately and initiate a chargeback against the publishing company. They told you that for the price of one magazine you would get six. One magazine doesn't cost $80 a month! This is a con. With one phone call your bank will stop all charges from that company. You may even want to ask for your bank to cancel your existing credit card number and have a new card with a new number issued. |

I did that also,so don't feel bad. What you can do is go to your bank and have the payment cancelled. Your bank should send you a form to fill out to contest the payment and why. |
