I lived in Canada where they have Loony's ($1) and Two-ny's ($2). It was hard to get used to at first, but once I did, it was just as easy to use as a paper dollar and not as heavy in my purse or wallet as many of these responses believe. Rarely do I carry more than $4 in ones and any one time anyway, so at most I'm looking at 4 coins.

I travel a lot and reaching into my pocket to grab a coin for a tip was much less cumbersome than trying to locate a few ones without having them balled up in a wad.

The $2 coins were very convenient as often you want to tip more than a one but less than a $5.

Small added bonus...I always had more money in my pocket than I realized. A few weeks ago I had a business trip back to Canada. It had been more than 2 years since I'd been there. When I opened my Canadian money purse, it was filled with coins...over $40 worth. Very cool to find out you have extra money.

As for the US government, the only way to get Americans to use $1 coins is to do what Canada did...stop printing them! Human nature as it is, we resist change. The only way to get us to embrace it is to give us no option.

By the way, the average life of a dollar bill is 18 months (versus 5 years or more for larger denominations). That means those one's have to be taken out of circulation, destroyed and new one's printed. At .04 per bill, over time, this is very costly. 3.5 billion $1 bills were printed in 2007. At .04 cents a piece, the government would have saved $140,000,000 this year, and next year, and the next..... Zero national debt anyone? Moving to coins would save considerable tax payer dollars in that coins can last literally thousands of years (it's still pretty easy to get hold of a "widow's mite" from Roman times BCE.

Dollar bills are much cheaper and easier to carry. Imagine carrying a pocket full of dollar coins around? What a hassle.

if they do that how would you tip strippers??

Hi There,
NO! I live in Canada where we have the "Loonie Coin" and it's just another pain, weigh me down, & people in the public to get more out of you, plus Government! My handbag gets too full & weighs me down. Beggers ask for loonies and this is right along with the Toonie we have weighs u down.
And because of this people aren't counting correctly either!
I'd rather have a dollar bill & a 2 dollar bill in my wallet instead
of $1.00 - $20.00 coins, think about it! It's a weight on you

The government has been trying to do this for years but people won't use them. They tried Susan B Anthoney, Sachewgea, and currently wahington Dollar coins. People refuse to use them so it would not be a good idea. (Maybe a 2$ coin or 1.50 coin would work better)

its easier carrying dollar bills than dollar coins
carrying 5 bucks in dollar coins gets pretty anoying after a while. i would knwo

No !! Can you imagine carrying around
fourty dollars in coins ? Money will soon
be obsolete in the near future - All Credit

No. Coins are heavy and difficult to carry. Having a lot of change in your pocket or wallet is annoying. But of course they don't wear out as bills do.

nunovyurbizness
Canada did it and it works fine... The US just needs to make the commitment... they've tried the dollar coin, just haven't made it stick.

Goodness, no! Haven't you noticed the trouble young men have keeping their pants up lately? With the extra weight of the coins, I shudder to think ! ! ! ! !

I agree with parrot. I traveled to Australia for a few weeks and the one dollar coin was a huge hassle. I mean, in America, we lose pocket change a lot. A few cents maybe? With dollar coins, we could lose up to twenty bucks just by walking down the street.
One concept I liked, though, was the two dollar coin. just made making change a lot easier. I wouldn't mind that at all.

no, they'd be heavy and people lose coins more then they lose dollar bills.

Good idea though ;)
