My thinking on this is that it is a reflection of the total doctrine of the government - if the government is sensibly run, with responsible distribution of resources and the sensitive handling of indivdual belief structures, then total freedom of speech shouldn't cause too many problems. Unfortunately, I don't know of any governments that fit this description and so at least some of the people are usually resentful, unsure, insecure, and often misinformed and therefore some censorship is required simply as a firefighting measure for keeping the peace. It sucks a bit, but there you go. |
