Supermarket charged me too much?
I was told they supposed to give me the item for free and my money back as they had over charged me on a item, is this true?

that depends on the store policy-- I always try to check my reciept before i leave the store and get it taken care of right away-- sometimes i wonder if the store does it on purpose though( ring stuff up wrong) cause they know that most people don't look at their receipt or the customer thinks it's only a few cents that was lost by them...well in reality if alot of people buy that product and are overcharged then the store will make out like bandits if nobody reports it or requests a refund

Ellie
It depends on what supermarket you worked at. They don't have to do it either- its a goodwill gesture on their part to keep your custom. If its Morrisons i can tell you you are stuffed! No such policy. Ring the supermarket first and enquire and make a note of whom you speak to so you can refer back to them when you visit.

It's not a law that they have to, although many stores do have this as their policy.

BOUDICA !!!! (*) (*) (*)
depends what supermarket it is, ask them.

i got over charged yesterday at superdrug it was supposed to be buy one get one free on nappy wipes but they charged me for both packs. when i complained they said there was nothing they could do as it was already logged into their till history and i should have said something at time of checkout ... duh i was busy trying to deal with 4 kids and trying to find my purse during checkout

Probably. Most supermarkets have a similar policy. I recently bought a box of cereal & the shelf tag showed $3.99 but it rang up as $4.19. I caught it (& held up the line) & they gave took the charge off my receipt & gave me the cereal.

Tesco do this as a rule. Asda will refund the difference and give you a wee swipey card with two pounds on it. It's worth checking yer receipt before ye leave the shop!! Asda used tae give ye the item for free, but I think it was costing them too much.

Depends on their customer policy. All they need to do is refund the extra you paid.

They are not obliged to but some would as a goodwill gesture.

Depends what store you are in and what their policy is. Legally, I think they only have to give you back the difference but some stores, like Tesco will indeed give the money back and give you the item for free. This has happened to me at Tesco once - I find they rarely make mistakes. However, Sainsbury's only give you back the difference and I find that I am at the Customer Services counter with overcharged items at least once a month. If they are that bad they obviously can't afford to give you the item for free. I ALWAYS check my receipt before leaving the store. I don't know what the policies are in other major stores.

psymon
The only legal requirement is for them to pay back the difference, anything extra is due to the particular store's customer care policy.
