Does any1 else get annoyed when u purchase a new television the tv licencing authority get to know about it too. I understand that its because people try to avoid buying 1 but i feel that it is an invation of my privacy that they get all my details of when and where i purchase it and probabily what make and price i paid.
Very annoying seems as its not the first time its happened to me ( details in partners name for licence - not when buying at shop - therefore a cheeky letter |

I agree, i have threatened to take the TV Licencing authority to court for harassment, they just do not believe you when you tell them you do not own a TV, i keep getting letters to say they are coming round to interview me under caution, they are just bullies |

Every retailer who sells televisions has to notify the licencing authorities by law so you are better off buying privately.
This is very wrong and in my view breaches the Data Protection Act however,of course they will not agree with this.
I have recently got rid of our television and do not have anything that can pick up signals due to the offensive and threatening letters we have received from the assholes who are responsible for collecting the fee and,I am so looking forward to the inevitable visit from the TV Nazis. |

Happened to me last week, annoyed me. I told em it wasn't for me, it was for a present so I wasn't going to give my name and address as I didn't want them sending me junk mail. That confused the spotty adolescent behind the till.
He had to call the manager who agreed that I didn't have to give my name but had to give the name of the person receiving it. I gave em my grandfather's name (he died ten years ago).
I do have TV licence by the way. |

It is annoying, but also a legal requirement for stores to give details of TVs purchased to the licensing people. It's a bit like buying a new car - it has to be registered etc and if you don't do it they make you pay lots of money or take it away. The main thing they're interested in is whether your address has a TV licence that covers that type of TV. If the names are different, you could be a different tenant in the same building, in which case technically you would need your own licence hence the letter.
If in doubt, give the licencing people a call and ask what they're on about. Otherwise, I suggest you and your partner write a joint letter to them stating that you live together at that address and requesting that this information be held on file. If both of you sign it, it should be useable as evidence, so make sure you have a copy. NB I have no legal background, it's just a suggestion. |

The trader can not refuse to request your info because he is bound by the law
The tv licencing as you say are trying to catch those who do not pay
Your only choice to avoid the privacy is to buy second hand/privately/etc |

Retailers of TV sets are obliged by law to notify the licensing authority of your name & address. This was introduced many years ago. The Data Protection Act was not then in force, but there will be provisions for the supply of personal information by all manner of organisations under given circumstances . |

I Agree ASDA do the same for DVD recorders its none of there dawm business what if the attendant is a nutter they have all your details and can stalk you and **** like that. Mind you i don't suppose it matters really if there nice. |
