The flames of the fire burn upwards, but the structure burns and crumbles downwards ! |

actually it can be both. If the bottom burns first (up) then it can't support the upper floors and then it collapses into the fire (down) |

If almost nothing is left except ashes on the ground, it burned up.
If there are lots of remains other than ashes lying on the ground, it burned down.
I think most people are in the burned down category though.
The burned up people are unusual and probably have some distinguishing characteristic which you should discover for us.
Bang.
Small things burn up. Big things burn down.
I just realized this up or down thing is redundant.
Maybe we should just say 'It burned.' |

Down. Buring up suggests buring is how something is used. Like you burn up a match. That is how you use a match. Like saying "used up" Whenever the result is possitive you use "up" But when the result is destructive or unintended then we say "down" Like when a car wears out we say it "ran down" |

Up. There is the remains of one across the street. Destroyed but still standing. |

Where did the fire start?
This is too open of a question.
I know fire can climb, but as floors fall out due to the weakening, it would also descend.
Can you be more specific? |

I believe it's burned up...the fire starts at the bottom and works it self up..when the fire is over everything is on the ground so we say it burned down...interesting thing to think about and I may be wrong but was fun taking shot at it...thanks... |

What was the structure made of? I would say "down". |

When a structure is on fire it's burning up,when the structure is no longer on fire the structure has been burn down. |

The way it trully works no matter where the fire started and no matter how it burned....
High amounts of heat is applied to the structure of which then releases gases from the structure. As those gases get burned UP, the structural integraty begins to weaken to the point that the structure then comes DOWN.
If the structure burns but doesn't loose its strength (doesn't fall) then the area is just burned UP. |
