Roy Orbison turned down a chance to manage The Beatles.

Absolutely. It's a well known story. They were on the same bill in England in 1964 or 65. Orbison headlined and the up and coming Beatles talked him into letting them play the final set since he was already getting top billing. Roy easily agreed to let them go .

Unfortunately (For the Beatles), the British crowd - like virtually all Brittons, just ADORED Roy. The crowd demanded - and GOT - something like 20 (TWENTY!) encores and curtain calls from Roy. Finally, John Lennon and Paul McCartney came onstage, took Roy by the arms and laughingly yelled "YANKEE GO HOME!" and ushered him off stage.

There was always a close friendship between them after that, which is how Roy was offered the job as their manager just at their worldwide popularity was cresting. This is also how he and George Harrison would up with the Traveling Wilburys decades later.

You can ask or find out more over at www.orbison.com. They have a pretty fair forum over there. I shy away from it however, as I don't like what Barbara Orbison has done in marketing him commercially in praise of the Almighty Buck vs. promoting the man and his talents.

P.S. Incidentally. If you're not familiar with LARRY BRANSON, it might be worth your while to check him out. He's an Orbison impersonator who starred in the British stage show The Roy Orbison Story. (The CD is still available and not bad.) Branson's voice was fair to middlin' and the CD was well done overall. The BIG SHOCK is that about seven years ago, Branson released an album of his own. Now I've been an Orbison fan for 40 years and I'll tell you in no uncertain terms: Branson SOUNDED EXACTLY LIKE ROY AT HIS VERY BEST! EVERY note and inflection was PURE CLASSIC ROY! Absolutely UNBELIEVEABLE!!! To my knowlege, Branson has released absolutely nothing since and I suspect that Barbara Orbison is probably behind that.
