There are photos that I look at that are black and white. If the same picture where to be colored it would not be the same "image". What is it about black and white photography that is appealing for some images and not others.

Perhaps because of the shadows that black and white photos cast, which foregrounds the highlighted images even better.Personally, i have found close-up portraits in black n white very appealing. Black and white while being contrasting also lend a calm to a still shot, whereas other brighter make heavy demands on our sense of vision. |

For me, when I view a black and white photograph, it appears simplistic, incomplicated by matching colors and other invaders of space. When I look at a black and white photo of children playing, I see their happiness, their carefree attitude, the same photo in color can cause confusion in the mind and the children arent the focal point anymore. I am not saying its not a beautiful picture still, but sometimes the photos meaning, the emotion of the picture, gets lost in the color. Some of the best romantic films have been done in black and white, when they are redone in color, they lose their emotion and seem less than the original idea or feeling that I saw in the black and white film. I truely believe that black and white makes the focus of the picture easier to spot than in color. I hope this helps. I am sure there are others in the world that see things differently, but every one is entitled to an opinion. Right? |

i think many images are better suited for black and white than for color. any images of historical or industrial settings, especially outdoors, are better captured in stark black and white. their sharp edges are better defined, and the structure in the image becomes the focus for my eyes. (i'm thinking exactly of a suspension bridge, or an assembly line, a railroad, or a mansion) for shots of nature, i think color is the better choice, unless the subject is monochrome (a completely white tundra landscape, or a frozen lake, or a night scene.)
black and white CAN be used for personal close-ups, but i really prefer sepia here for a more life-like tone, and a feeling of 'historical authenticity'. people just don't look good in gray.
i have always known WHAT i like in photography, but this is the first time i've ever had to put it into words... not an easy process, thanks for the opportunity! |

u must consider the lighting properly,
black & white photos much better u have lighting problems
in coloured there should be a adjustment

You don't see all the blemishes in black and white.... it looks more 'clean' and more 'classy' too. Don't really know why on that last part. |

Images vary upon effects. I think black and white images looks good because the color complexity is not there. |

it's the lighting i think, the kinds of colors present, plus the kind of effect you are going for. shadows and hightened contrast, in my opinion, are better for black & white or desaturated pictures. |

I think it gives it more of a "still" feeling, makes it more like you are viewing it from the outside and gives your more opportunity to dream and fantasize in it. Just like paintings, when they are not the actual reality, it allows your imagination to work. |

the problem with color is that it distracts from the details of the photo.. black and white on the other had accent the contrast hence brining out the details |
