Human beings are visual creatures (particularly men - no offense intended). It might be something purely superficial, but it might also be that they want to have some sort of visual impression of you to hold in their mind when you're chatting online or on the phone. Of course, it could just be that whoever it is has their priorities all screwed up and insist on having only attractive friends, significant others, and aquaintances... |

unless you are planning on spending time with whoever the culprit is in person, it shouldnt be an issue. you can always let them know that your physical appearance is not important to your "blind" friends. dont forget that if you do decide to indulge this person's inquisitiveness, you can always use terms that you feel comfortable with. dont describe the obvious (ie 5'7", blond hair blue eyes ect.) go for something more(ie i have a well defined chin and i keep my fingernails painted) this gives a description that is true without catering to a potentially superficial person. |

I don't think it is shallow to care how someone looks-- I think it is important that you find that person appealing in every way possible-- mind, body and soul-- and what one person finds attractive-- another may not-- |

apparently you are referring to when you "meet" someone on-line. I think the biggest reason for wanting to see a picture is that it makes the experience that much more real. The more senses are involved, the more real it is. Think about when you meet a person in real life. You can see them, you can hear their voice, sometimes you can smell them (for good or bad), you can touch them, you can even taste them (if you kiss). On the internet, all you can do is type back and forth. So, you don't have a whole lot to go on, as far as what the person really is like. This is why people like to see a picture of you, why they want to get your phone number and talk to you, and eventually meet you in real life: because anything until then, you just have to imagine what the other person is like -- and we all know how easily it is for our imaginations to get carried away. Someone who could be a serial killer might seem as sweet and kind as your grandmother -- but, if you can experience who they are on multiple levels, you are less likely to be tricked, and less prone to misperceptions about that person. |
