If the land doesnt belong to yoru family then it doesnt matter because you can't claim it. If its really old then the land has probably already been claimed, either by owner or by state.
Most state websites have a link to unclaimed 'property'. If it belongs to your family and your consider selling just contact a realtor in the area and have them send you an estimated value based on sales for similar properties in that area.
Find out if its unclaimed first.

You need to do a title search. The person may have filed the original deed with the courts and that may be a copy. |

The only one who can claim the land is someone who is related to the name on the deed. So even if you check on the amount by law unless you are the closest relative or the one in the will you can not claim it. |

If you have reference to the property on the deed, it may have been seized years ago for back taxes. Contact the property tax agency for the county where the property is registered to determine the property status. If you are curious about the value of the deed itself, without the property, it's value is strictly intrinsic. |

Turn it in to the Police lost and found department. Be sure to outline the situation clearly so they know you didn't steal it. They'll try to track down whoever owns it. If they can't after a certain period of time (usually around a month), it's yours. |
