What's the best pricing system for yard/garage sales? I'm always afraid I'm charging too little or too much.

I always price a little higher and let them negotiate me down...that way they are getting a "deal" and so am I because that was figured that in to start with. Don't charge a whole bunch for clothing items - they just don't sell very well unless they are new and still have tags on. And, the bigger the sale, the more customers, so go in with a couple of other people and do it together. Sell sodas, homemade cookies, coffee in the morning...let the kids make the profits from those things, etc. It turns out really good that way. Sometimes enough to take a vacation on =)

curious me
Some people don't feel comfortable initiating a haggling session with the yard sale(r), and will often just not get the item if they think it is too high. Ask yourself, "How badly do I want to get rid of this stuff?" and price it lower, especially if you are going to just donate the leftover items at the end of the day. Be sure to tell the folks that most prices are negotiable as they come, and have a couple of signs in your yard that say that. Of course, you will usually have a few bold people that will try to haggle you down to a ridiculous price, I guess try to intimidate you into basically give it to them, but you have to smile and say, "I can't take any less for what I'm offering, or I'll just have to buy it back myself at that price!" Humor helps in those situations. I've been to some yard sales where the prices are silly-high, like what is in a brick and mortar store...If you don't want to put the stuff back in storage, and want to make some extra cash, price it to go and on the items that you won't take any less for, just put "Firm" underneath the amount you have on it.

Patience
I had the same "dilema". I think the best way to figure out what's about the average price to charge is to visit several other rummages. By doing that you can estimate what's about the correct amount to price things. Some people stop at several rummages and they'll remember who has the best prices and they might even recommend that rummage to others.

Price should be set at 50% or less of current lowest retail price for used things. Less for wear & tear or other flaw. More if still in packaging, maybe 75%.

Well since it's not ebay, or an auction, and it's not a store, so don't price anything but funiture over $20buck. You could for example, make a box of junk 5 bucks...set up multiple boxes. Don't over price crap or you'll be carrying it back in the house. Don't worry about underpricing, it's a yardsale, just get rid of it.

Most of the garage sales I have been to the seller usually gives the buyer the option of dickering for a lower price. Unless it is a really collectable item or brand new I would not charge over $5 (unless it is a piece of furniture or something more pricy like jewelry)

The best way to find out is what others (in your area) are charging for the same things. It is just like that in business you have to find out what your competitor are doing, and you have to be cosistant as to the prices they are advertising or selling for. This is called Market Value, you want to not stray from that.

So go out do a little research within your community find out what they are charging and charge the same or a little less for the same items. Going cheaper never hurt anyone, look at Wal-Mart (even though I hate them) you cannot argue with their success.

First, if you have any unusual items, check ebay (or just google them) to see if you might have a high ticket item. You'll never get your money's worth on a collectible at a garage sale.

After that, for each item, decide whether your price is firm or whether you'll allow negotiation. If the former, set the price fairly. If the latter, you could set it a little higher for those who like to negotiate.

Personally, I'm planning to set a reasonable price from the beginning, because I'm not a haggler myself. If I saw something at a yard sale that was priced too high, I'd just put it down. Anti-American I know, but there it is.

As for how you choose a price - there's no firm guideline. Consider how much YOU would have paid for the item at a yard sale. Forget how much you paid for it - look at it with a stranger's eyes.

The Answer Guy
Figure out what price you are comfortable selling for, and add a little bit more so that there is haggle room for the customer. If you have some high ticket items you can use auction sites like E-Bay or Yahoo to see what similar items are going for. You shouldnt fear charging too much as long as someone is willing to buy it.

It's always comforting to say "how much do you want to pay for it?" Remember that you are not running a retail store...give them the impression that everything must go!!! To start out w/ this line of answer gives your buyer a feeling that they might be incharge of the prize and make them ask themselves "what else can I buy for my buck?" and also that you're open for bartering.

1. Always lean towards "too much" over "too little" because 99% of garage sale shoppers want and expect to haggle, and at least 1/2 of them would still try to talk you down if you were offering an item worth $50 for a nickle!!
2. you don't have to put prices on all, or any, of your items. let people ask you the price, then quote a little high (again, because they WILL haggle); or just say "make me an offer" and don't be afraid to negotiate up if you think it's too low.
3. good rule of thumb: if you do price things, the ones that aren't moving at all, or that people keep asking if you are firm on the price, may be priced too high. the items that are snatched up with little or no haggling were probably priced too low! LOL
