My brother in law found out that someone has his s/s # and whoever took it is applying for jobs and credit cards with his #. What should we do next? Who do we call/email/write/harass? I have NO idea?!?!? (i guess it wouldn't be the first time, ha ha!)
BTW - I didn't know what category to put this under either... |

First you should call the Social Security office. Then make sure there is a police report on file in his city.
And finally call all of the major credit bureau's(Equifax, Experian and Trans Union). Ask them how to get a note in his files that his number has been taken and that any new credit checks may not be from him. He may have to write them a letter to get it done.

Call the SS office. just look up social security, do a google search, look for .gov extensions. |

Contact Social Security right away! Contact credit reporting agencies and tell them about it being stolen. They can put a flag on his accounts, if someone tries to use his credit rating to apply for a loan or credit card, it will notify them and they could stand a chance of catching them. Good luck. |

Notify the Social Security office in your town and notify the big three credit report companies. Equifax is one, but I can't remember the other two. Good luck. |

Contact your banks to cancel all accounts. They were able to give me names and phone numbers of what had to be cancelled. Call the police. They also will tell you who to contact. |

Contact the Social Security Administration. They will tell you exactly what to do next. If they put an alert out then all credit applications will be quashed. |
