Dividends are payments made to a company's stock holders as a share of the company's profits. Some companies pay dividends; some do not. Reasons for paying them are many: as a reward for investors having invested in the company and holding its stock, as an inducement to get more investors, and as a way to retain stockholders. Companies that do not pay dividends do not pay them but opt instead to put profits back into growth and salary increases.
I like dividends, especially if they are around 4 percent, because they help me buy additional stock. Also, it is nice to make money from the stock without having to sell the stock (at a profit, one would hope). |

A dividend is money that a company pays back to its shareholders. It is done on a per-share basis, so like if the company is paying a $0.10 dividend and you own 20 shares, you will get $2.00 |

Basically you take the company's pretax profit. This is called earnings and if you divide by the number of shares in issue you get earnings per share. Now this all belongs to shareholders, but usually the Company will retain a part of the earnings to cover investment in its business. The remainder will be paid out to the shareholders which is known as the dividend. |

Dividends are payments made by a corporation to its shareholder members.
This means that for every share you own, you are paid a portion of the company's earnings.
For example, for every share of AT&T you own, you will get sent $0.15 every year. Most companies pay dividends quarterly (four times a year), meaning at the end of every business quarter, the company will send a check for 1/4 of $0.15 for each share you own. |

they are things that go on the ends of Divids
also .... it's the gain/return you get on an investment say you have 100 shares worth $1 each ... and at the end of the quarter they're now worth $1.10 ... and you get paid the difference of 10c ... that's your dividend |
