Lamb725 | What are the benefits, if any, in using a debit card versus writing a check? Which is safer? |

Debit card pluses:
Fast, easy, and reliable.
You don't have to stand in line at the check-out with 100 other people in line glaring at you as you sit there and are writing out a check.
In most cases when you use a debit card they won't even ask for an ID, unlike with checks where you MUST show an ID each and every time.
Debit card minuses:
Card number theft:
Although, it doesn't happen often, there are criminals out there that can attach a special 'black box' if you will, to an ATM, register, or even a gas pump, that will allow them to collect a bunch of debit card and pin numbers for their evil purposes.
Never ever give your debit card number out over the Internet. Unlike credit cards where there is a federal law that states that you are only liable for up to $50 if someone steals your card number, this law does not apply to debit cards.
There are however, some banks that voluntarily offer this liability coverage, but it's not mandatory like the credit cards are. Check your bank, and state laws before getting a debit card to find out what your level of liability protection actually is. |

a debit card is usually sent over a secure line and is more secure than a check . the only problem is many banks are now charging for this service. as with a credit card the seller has to pay the fee. now a check is worse as you have given your entire account no. to a complete stranger. as you know you should never give this info out on the net for the same reason . identity theft or bank theft is much easier than any of us think it is. |

Debit cards are much faster and almost every place takes debit cards. Many restaurants and gas stations no longer accept checks. |

Credit Card with 2 different address is the most safe. First address is home address to apply the CC. Second is office address to be billed by CC. |

When you hand someone a check, you are giving them your checking account number. Hopefully, you don't have any more information printed at the top of the checks.
I would say debit cards are a bit more secure but I still say the best thing is use a credit card and pay it off every month. If someone uses this, then you can simply refuse payment. Better than begging your bank to put money back in to your account. |

Benefits of using a debit card?
No need to carry a checkbook or large sums of cash when you shop.
Debit cards are more widely accepted than checks, making them perfect for travel.
Since debit cards use your own money, not your credit, they're often easier to get than credit cards. |

I prefer to use a debit card everywhere I go, unless I'm paying bills or rent. Checks obviously aren't necessarily the safest thing in the world, only because you have your address and sometimes your phone number printed on them, so anyone can find your residential information and go from there. With a debit card you can just enter your PIN and that's it! Also, checks usually take longer to clear in your bank account, and sometimes you wind up forgetting about a check you wrote until it all of a sudden pops up! WIth a debit card at least the money is taken out immediately. Plus it's easier than waiting for a check to go through the stores system! |

Debit cards are quicker. Also, the cashier and accounting office personel don't have access to as much of your personal info. I would think it would be safer to use the debit card. |
