Well, I didn't see the special.
The penny costs MORE than it is worth! So it is just draining money out of the economy.
They use up valuable metal resources.
The only thing keeping them around, is that people are attached to old things. We grew up with them, some people can't let go. |

I caught only part of the 60 minutes special and one of the problems with eliminating the penny is that it would tend to be inflationary in the short term. With the penny gone, retailers would round prices up thereby raising the prices of just about everything we buy. Apparently, studies which have been done have concluded that countries which eliminated the lowest denomination of currency have virtually all experienced an immediate increase in consumer prices due to this rounding up phenomenom. The special also referenced other studies which have demonstrated that there is generally substantial resistance from the public to eliminating long standing pieces of currency such as the penny. |

I didn't watch the special...but if they get rid of the penny, they won't lower rates and of course, the cost of living will be rounded up. And I don't doubt it that the pay rates will remain the same. |

well for starters you should ask the man that just bought a brand new truck with the pennies he has saved over the years. i see no con to the penny at all. it is money and its nice to have those 3 handy when your total is 10.03 amd all you have otherwise is a 20.00 |
