There are a couple of things that you can do. First request for the necessary time off and offer to work on other days so that someone else can be off on a different day. IF YOU agreed to work anytime then you are pretty much at the mercy of your employer but if you WROTE on your application that you were not available to work on your Sabbath/ Sunday/ worship days and religious holidays then they must allow you the day off. YOU really need to use this as a last resort because it is always better to try to negotiate a compromise. Like I will work New Years eve and new years day if I can have off Christmas eve and Christmas Christmas day. Usually you and your employer can negotiate so that most of the people will have at least some of their time off to. |

You dont have to work on religious holidays by law. That is subject to the terms & conditions of your contract with your employer. I would say if they are serious about you working on that day then why dont you? Unless you are very religious & desperately need the break you should work & ask them for a generous overtime agreement. It can only benefit you on the long run for times when you need favours from them. |

This depends on the industry in which you're working. I mean if you work for a hospital, nursing home, hotel, or restaurant where you're like a lifeline or a restaurant or hotel they have parties on these dates - it's really a part of the job you signed up for. You probably get time and a half - gosh - I'll take the hours for you - I need extra $! People in the military don't have a choice about these things either. So quit or show what a valuable employee you are by making the sacrifice. |

Someone has to work holidays. Usually it is done on a rota basis. Or, some people swap days with others where one of them would wish to celebrate a particular holiday, like Christmas Day, and the other would not be bothered if they had to work.
Then perhaps you are a VIP to all of us, and we couldn't manage without you being there. There are too many professions to mention, and I wouldn't like to miss one, but you know what I mean.
Some of my single friends go on call in place of their married colleagues around the Christmas holidays, to make it possible for them to be with their children.
As long as they are not just useing you to fill in for others in an unfair way, then I don't think there is anything you can do other than work. You will enjoy it knowing that you are a very important cog in the machinery of life. |

Not a lot really.If you are rotor ed to work,you work.Faking illness is not on.Not fair on whichever workmate has to cover for you.I'm in Security and I'm working over Xmas/new year,tough but its my job.We cant all be off,otherwise the country would come to a halt. |

You have lots of options, besides just quitting.
1. Convert to another religion so your holidays are on days they don't mind you taking off
2. Open your own business
3. Just say No and hope they don't fire you
4. Or just get used to people walking over you, and making you do things you don't want to do but have to for the money. |

dont make a fuss or mention it again,agree to it
then come down with something "really contagious" xmas eve
or pretend to hurt your back,the doctors always have trouble disproving that complaint
come new year just remember to say you spent xmas in bed and it was miserable
your boss sounds a git,so no need to feel guilty if he has to go in himself to doyour work! |
