If you just want to lend money to people, don't waste time by actually starting a bank. Zopa have already come up with the solution for you:
www.zopa.com/member/The%20Hulk
(This link will present you with a special offer. You get a complimentary £30 if you lend more than £500.)
From here you can lend money to individuals with good credit ratings, and keep all the interest without the banks taking their cut.
You choose who you lend to, you choose the rate of interest you want, and you choose how long you lend for. I've been using this for nearly a year, and have got very good results from it. I'm currently enjoying around 10% return.
Have a look and see what you think. |

I don't mean to be rude but starting a bank in the UK is very very unlikely to happen, especially with state of the economy right now. Shares have plumeted, interest rates are high. Just look at Northern Rock, used to be respectable but the recent issues have had a knock on effect with every bank. You would be a TON of money and a whole bunch of rich investors to make up your funding. 1 person cannot set up a bank on their own, it is impossible. Banks are so much more than just retail, they have business customers, premier customers, international, commercial financing, factoring etc etc. Also, you will need customers and customers aren't going to be easy to get unless you offer something other banks don't for cheaper, which a new business isn't likely to do without failing.
Sorry, it's harsh but true. |

You should poach Howard from the halifax adverts and have him sing and dance outside your bank, that'll do the trick....lol |

You would have to convince the Financial Services Authority that you were a fit and proper person, and you would need to demonstrate considerable resources in both finance and personnel.
The word 'bank' is a reserved business name and it would be illegal for you to trade as such without registering.
It will also take about 7 to 10 years to break even. |
