Manufacturing has been dying out in UK for decades.It's the same situation in USA/.Both of these economies now depend almost entirely on service industries.Simply,this means servicing one another,for example,you repair my car,I wash your windows,you cut my hair,I do your accountancy and so on.As far as manufacturing goes,most of everything produced are non essential goods designed to make life more comfortable for everybody.You could say,manufacturing produces the hardware for living,service industries produce the software.Hardly any difference really. |

I come from a town built around manufacturing cotton yet all the factory`s are sadly gone now, i worked at the local wallpaper factory as a printer and that has closed now. All these industrial sites are now residential forcing people to travel for work yet we are being blamed for the high amount of traffic on the roads but that`s another subject, i think this country is only running on debt. Everyone pays by credit card, we are running this country on a false economy and once everyone of those borrowers have got into so much dept and realise they can claim bankruptcy this country will be in so much SHITE. We make very little in this country now and export less |

Well, we're the financial capital of the world - lots of money to be made there and being services, not much in terms of physical input but lots in terms of "brain" use hence, the bankers, etc earning huge sums. Also, UK is mainly a service industry and profit margins are usually much higher in service industries than in manufacturing. However, think BP, Tesco - huge profit from these companies lately and some of them from their international operations. |
