What do you do when a NEW coworker, who is your assistant, with a higher education, makes more money than you?
Can you really negotiate a higher salary by bringing up that you know this other person is making more than you?

Deep Thought
Everything is negotiable! Just find the right moment to bring this subject up to your boss (i.e. when he's in a good mood, after he congratulates you for something you did etc. ) timing is everything in these kind of matters.
Pay should be according to the effort one makes for the company, not according to how much they study. More responsibilities = more money. So assistants can't make more than their bosses.

The fact that your subordinate makes more money than you can be a reason that you can present to your boss when asking for a raise, but i don't think it should be the main reason. I would suggest that you emphasize on the importance of your work and how does that contribute to the business.

How do you KNOW what this person is making?

And if she is better educated, and perhaps has more experience, then why shouldn't she make more?

If you've been there a lot longer you should be able to talk to your boss and talk to them about giving you a raise. How do you know this person is making more than you? They could be full of it and then you'll look stupid. I think you should just talk with your boss about your issues and see what happens. Your coworkers qualifications are a big issue when it comes to salary. If you're "less qualified" and they don't give you a raise, see what you can do about getting more qualified (i.e. going back to school). Hope everything works out ok. I've been in that position, however, the other person wans't more qualified, I just got left off the "raise" wagon, so my boss apologized and gave me my dues. I don't know exactly what your situation is, though. Good luck to you.

David
are you doing any more work or anything "extra" that would make you deserve a higher salary?

On the other side when it comes around time for raises, they'll hopefully notice that there is a disparity in your pay and work to fix that.

The girl is a geek.
I certainly wouldn't.

If you want a better salary you need to present facts about your work ability and ethic to your supervisor. Show then why your job performance should be worth more than they are paying you.

It is very taboo to bring up a co-workers pay when asking for a raise.

Most companies think it is rather gauche and rude for employees to be discussing their pay amongst each other..and frankly, so do I.

My motto concerning my salary and my co-workers salaries is "Don't ask. Don't tell." It is really NOYB what anyone makes and would probably just anger your boss if you whined to them about it.

You can't. Go get a degree.

Get a better education, or a different job. Education costs time and money, and a person who has gotten one deserves to be compensated for it.
