What do you think about people who are on WELFARE?

hector
i think its too bad for them and also think it is better than having starving children on american city streets.i feel most us are lucky not to be on welfare line.never know the day might come for some.

I agree. There are people that really need the system. Most don't want to be on welfare, but they can't help it. Then we have those "welfare queens" that drive nice cars and have the latest fashions...

As much as i'd love to make generalizations based on income, i'm not going to. I'd like to take this opportunity to applaud those who aren't afraid to use the system that's in place during finical difficulty. Further more i'd like to point out my own sister's success with welfare as a single mother training for a better career.

Many people are actually legitimately on welfare, and in that case, I'm all for it. But it's the goofballs that abuse it and are lazy that ruin it for the really needy ones. Another point is...that alot of times, it's all or nothing. I've seen this happen. Somebody is trying desparately to get off of welfare, but there is no transition period. When it is all taken away from you...and you are working your butt off, you tend to think, why should I? I am in the same position as I was before. There needs to be an "easing out of welfare" plan.

The word welfare doesn't mean much any more, it's actually hard to get cash help.

Food stamps, medicaid, housing, yes, you can get those, easier. Still need to pay utilities.

And people do abuse the system.

But, I see a lot who have very low paying jobs. Jobs that don't meet their needs. Food, especially medical, and housing

And the need I think is getting greater for those who are not abusers.

Though our unemployment statistics show pretty much the same as it always has been. The truth is there are a lot who haven't been able to get jobs. Those who lost their jobs because of 911 or NAFTA, Enron, etc, etc.
And they are in need of help now, because their unemployment ran out, ages ago.

These people are considered - discouraged workers - and there are no statistics, that I am aware of, that show how many there really are.

Or how long they have been unemployed
or
what ~ low paying jobs ~ they have been forced to take, that don't meet their needs. (needs, not wants)

No one is going to help re-educate them into jobs equal to what they had. Or ~ need ~.

And is re - education the answer when many are at an age where no one wants to hire them anyway?

Many have medical conditions where no one wants to hire them either, yet they don't qualify for disability.

Even if they did qualify for disability, you really can't live on it if you have a family. And a lot of older folks these days still have children at home, because they waited to have their children, so they could have their careers. Which do them no good today.

I foresee many more of the middle class joining the ranks of the poor. As the cost of living goes up and more jobs are lost.

It's very sad cause -

Once you get caught in the system it's really hard to get out.

The more money you make the less help you get, yet you can't get a head enough to do without the help, because the jobs available no longer pay enough to live on.

Medical insurance is a huge issue. Most companies either don't have it or cheat your hours so you can't get it. Or it's so expensive you can't afford food or other ~ needs ~.

Yet living with out it can be a big risk.

Leaving you wondering why you even try.

It really discourages employment altogether. But that's been the problem with the system all along.

There have been some who manage to find a good opportunity to get out from under it. They do not realize how blessed they are.

Not only does it take a lot of hard work and sacrifice, but the
~ opportunity ~
has to be there.

Without an open door there is only - the system

The ones who need it and only use it until they get back on their feet...fine, do what you need to.
Those who abuse it should be shot. Period.

some people do not have transportation or away to and from the baby sitters house. The system should provide transportation maybe more people would work.

There are two type of people on welfare the ones who truely need it and the ones who abuse it.

1) The ones who need it: I use to work for an after school program. One of my kid's mom was on welfare. She was on welfare only to get herself through college because otherwise that she would not be able to get a good job to support her and her 5 year old daughter. Her daughter was only at afterschool because mom couldn't make it to the school by 2:30. Mom walked and rode the bus. She dressed cheaply but made sure her daughter had everything she needed. Once she graduated she moved off of welfare. Those kind of people I don't mind giving assitance to because they are working on trying to make themselves productive members of the employment society.

2) People who abuse it: I get sick of people who pop out all these kids and collect all this money. Or the people who don't do crap all day. They live better than working people. That is what irritates me. I think ever person should get 2 years maximum to be on welfare to get on their feet. If they can prove that they are still working on supporting themselves (i.e. college, trade school) than they can extend their benefits. If they can't prove it than kick them off.

Just pray that you never need it yourself.

I am pleased that there is a safety net for people when their need is great.

barearl@sbcglobal.net
They need it or they would not be on it. Like I get SSI/SSDI not because I want the governmant to care for me but because I have seizures, cant drive, and have mood swings.

Some are system abusing, lazy, good for nothing bums. Others acutally are in need of it and can't get it. It's an over-abused system and there needs to be a crackdown on it.

The people that truly need welfare are alright in my opinion. However, the ones who use it because they are too lazy to get a job are the moochers that bring down our society. It should only be a temporary solution to people's problems.

Dantes
I think they are unemployed. : )
