It means they are trailing off, allowing you to finish the thought for them. Of course, that may be giving you more credit than you deserve. I mean, if you were able to figure out what they were doing..... |

i do it all the time , generaly for 2 reasons. 1; it indicates i COULD go on & on with more of the same. or if it is in quotation marks[""] then it means there WAS more said, just not pertiant to the point i was making. and sometimes i use it to create a long pause in a sentence for effect., or to show my hesitation. sometimes i'll even use it at the beginig of a paragraph for that same reason.
...... well,... i hate to say this,... but , thats all i got. |

It means that they have something more to say but they somehow cannot/do not wish to express it. Or it may be because they do not wish to say something that others may disagree with. |

Well actually you're sposed to use just 3 or 4. but some people go overboard with way way too long dot dots, and thats just plain annoying. (Well, to me atleast) Different people use it to express different kinds of things and it all depends on what they're trying to say and you're interpretation of it, basically. Its a very versatile thing actually if you think about it, and since it is so overused, there isn't one correct meaning. |

It is a literary tool called an ellipse. It is used to indicate additional text that has been omitted. It is commonly misused in everyday written dialog. |

pause..... yeah.....pause. |
|

captainsquanto
 |
Generally it means to convey a long pause. Instead of saying "Ooooooook," one might say, "Ok........" and leave a dramatic pause.
Such, as "Wow, Johnny died?" would become "Wow...... Johnny died?"
It's just to add some dramatic realism. |
|

timbrock123
 |
those periods are called "ellipses" and they are used to convey the meaning that the thought expressed in the sentence is an unfinished thought. |
|

Its sort of a dramatic pause.....To let it register with the person reading it that you GET it. Mysteries abound... |

their either waitig for a response - or there being sarcastic... it just depends on what they said.... haha! or it could be just that they are thinking! |

it means they havent finished the thought yet or dont know how to finish it, so they use "....." for you to fill in or as a way to express that they cant finish, like shrugging your shoulders |
