What does the odometer do?

Its a mileage indiactor. It actually records the distance the vehicle has travelled. In addition it can also have a Trip odometer which can be used for calculating distances of each trip which can be set back to zero at the start of each trip. That way one could know the distance between two places. The main odometer is used to log the mileage of the vehicle and is useful to maintain a log whereby the maintenance (oil change. Clutch plate changes Brake shoe changes)etc can be carried out as per specifications. Certain states need an odometer certificate for buying and selling used vehicles

The term "odometer" means an instrument for measuring and recording the actual distance a motor vehicle travels while in operation; but shall not include any auxiliary odometer designed to be reset by the operator of the motor vehicle for the purpose of recording mileage on trips.

TeChNoXiC
it simply tells you how far your vehicle has already gone. other purposes for it is usually keeping track on when your vehicle needs its regualr maintenance checks as prescribed as the vehicle's manufacturer. although a more vague use my friend uses it for was to see how many dollars worth the car has taken him as he keeps track of the car's worth by placing an imaginary cost of a car should be worth something if it takes you a mile for every 5 cents he paid to buy it.... :-)

laz32
Tells you how many total miles are on your vehicle.
