You would not be cruising around on your pc tonight enjoying being on the internet unless bill gates spearheaded a team to develop dos and soon afterward windows operation system. he used instinctive and highly effective moves to make his microsoft windows the standerd guage (e.g. stand gauge tracks in railroading; like alternating curret vs. direct current became the standard). Setting standards and managing to get them accepted worldwide is a damn miracle!). I compare him to the father of the modern computerization of the world. There were and is other operating systems but Bill Gates made his win and gain acceptance. It actually worked and accelerated the process at relatively light speed. Maybe somebody else could have done it but that is a maybe. Bill Gates did it like Thomas Alva Edison made lightbulbs commonplace around the world.Bill Gates may have done something much larger. With that incredible feat accomplished he now concentates his energy on philantharpy. Instead of building golden gambling palaces like Trump, or buy up major sports teams for his personal amusement like some multimillionaires (like the owner of the Mavericks), Gates studies and helps solve the AIDS fiasco and a myiad of other needs that governments have failed to do anything of consequence. Bill Gates is a national treasure and assured of high status in American history books. He did it the old fashioned way -- he earned it! |

He concentrated on making an operating system for personal computers - first DOS and later the various versions of Windows.
He made a very smart business decision by allowing anyone to make computers that used his operating system software. Meanwhile Apple, which in many ways had superior operating system software ,refused to allow anyone to make clones of Apple computers and kept its prices high on the theory that its products were better. The public however found Microsoft's opperating system to be good enough -
As a result, Microsoft came to dominate the market for opperating system software, and Mr. Gates became the richest man in the world. The foundation that he started with his wife has given a great deal of money to charitable causes. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is highly respected - so much so that another billionare, Warren Buffet recently pledged to leave most of his fortune to it. |

Bill bought the rights to what became Microsoft for a very small amount of money and turned it into one of the biggest industries in the world. Meanwhile, he turned himself into the richest man in the world. That said, He has also given hundreds of millions of dollars to many different charities and organizations thru the Melinda and Bill Gates foundation. This of course may be to avoid taxes, but the funds have made a difference, never the less. |

He is a perfect illustration of the American Dream. He dropped out of Harvard to revolutionize the computer industry. He was willing to risk the great situation he was in for something he believed he could accomplish. That took some balls! Plus he made that computer your typing on what it is today. |

He stole the basis for DOS and achieved world domination by successful marketing and product placement in the now famous "personal computer" then he was able to stave off competition in the S/W business by bundling bad software with his O/S. |

He produced an astoundingly bad operating system, made tons of money, and pretended to look really generous by giving tons of it away. Oh, and wait a few years and he might have a nobel peace prize. |

He dropped out of high school and made himself a millionaire (or billionaire) I forget. Not too shabby. He revolutionized the computer world with new technology and still is. |
