What happen to slaves when the owners died?

dutchess_6767
In those days slaves were considered property and were treated as such. If the slave owner died they were often left to a family member, often passed from father to eldest son or from female family member to a younger female family member. There were cases of slave owners granting emancipation papers to their slaves upon their deaths and leaving them their freedom. If a slave owner died without heirs, the estate would have been taken over by the government and either sold as a whole with the slaves included, or broken up and disbursed with.

They were passed over to the heirs just like other property.

Slaves were considered property in the US. Many were given to the land owner's children, often as gifts or just as parts of the estate. So, the slave of a deceased land owner could be willed to someone else. They were not just released except in a few cases where land-owners stipulated that a slave was to be free after the land-owner's death.

Because slaves were considered property, when the owner died they would have belonged to whoever the estate went to.

I know it's disgusting, but it's true.

Well, it depends on what country and what period of time that slave was living in. It some slave holding cultures, slaves were freed when their owners died. If you are referring to the American culture of slavery, then it was completely up to the owner of the slave to decide his fate. A slave was considered the owner's property, therefor when the owner died, his will determined the fate of the slave. Some were emancipated by the owner's decree, others (and I assume most) were inherited by the owner's heirs. Many were sold to pay debts that were left to the owner. From the reading that I have done regarding the American slave culture, it seemed that as bad as the life was of a slave, the death of his owner was a horrific event in his life. It created fear and uncertainty for what the future would bring. It was a situation of "better the devil you know".

mlco
are u referring to slaves as in during slavery because slavery is illegal

lovergirl_reez
Well they could have either TAKEN their freedom till they were captured again, OR (this the one i think it more real,) they were sent or sold to another owner! waht do U think?
