If it's something you have to sign for, they leave you a note and you have to go to your local UPS store to pick up the package.
EDIT: WTF did I get thumbs down? lol That's the correct answer. Check for yourself: http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/service/index.html?WT.svl=PNRO_L1
Clearly says, "Find a UPS location to Retrieve Your Package" Not to mention the fact that it's personally happened to me before. |

The driver has the option of leaving the package without a signature if they feel it will be safe. Otherwise they will leave a not on the door. They will attempt 3 times before returning the package to the sender.
You can sign on the note that you take responsibility for the package and authorize UPS to leave it without a signature.
This all assumes that the shipper did not specify that a signature is required. In that case, someone has to sign for the package.
They do not make you go to the UPS store to pick up the package. |

They will leave it at your door unless the sender checked the signature required box. In that case, they will leave a notice with instructions in picking up the package or rescheduling the delivery. |

They leave a note and come back later |

It depends on the request of the person who sent the package. They may leave it at your door step, or the back door, or if they require a signature, then they'll leave a note saying they stopped by and when they'll stop by agian. I think they'll stop up to 3 times. In between stops, you can go to the UPS station in your area to pick it up. It'll be on the note they leave where the station is.
they may also leave it with a neighbor |

they keep it and leave a notice saying the package is at their offices; probably the closest location to your residence. you need to go pick it up... you'll need the notice and your id to pick it up... ups does not leave packages unless someone signs for them... |

sometimes they leave it. if it needs to be signed for, they may leave a note that you can sign and then they will come back and leave it. Or you can leave a note on the door instructing them to drop the package off at the next door neighbor and have them sign for it.
hope this helps |

In my experience, they've just left it on the doorstep or a neighbor offered to receive it and hold it for me. |

In my experience, they just leave it on your doorstep. I haven't gotten a slip saying they'd come back or that I had to go pick it up in years, although it may depend on the type of delivery, like registered postal delivery.
Hey, whoever gave me the thumbs down. What do YOU know about MY experience, dork? |

Could leave a message for them to get your neighbour to sign for it. |

if it's a signed for they will take it back to the depot and leave you a note to arrange another collection time, otherwise they may leave it on the doorstep or with a neighbour |

Usually if it is a pricey item you will have to sign for it and a note will be left on your door. If you are in an apartment complex it may be left at the office. You can call them ahead of time and let them know you will not be home and have them leave it with a neighbor or if time permits you can have them deliver it at your school. If it does not require a signature it will likly be left at your door. Go on line and find the UPS office nearest you and give them a call. |
