What is 2x+3y=-17?

My question is can u help with this system of equations 2x+3y=-17

2X + 3Y = -17 is an equation with many aanswers. A graph of this equation can be drawn on the number plane. This graph will be perpendicular to the graph 2X + 3Y = 17.

There is no single answer. eg if X = 1, Y will = 5 and
: if Y = 1, X will = 7.

To draw the graph, get a sheet of paper and draw one horizontal line, half way up the page. Now, draw a vertical line bisecting the horizontal line.

My son is having trouble with graphing systems of equations. The problem is 2x+3y=-17 y=x-4. Can you please explain to him how to do it?

Lets graph one equation at a time...
Get out a piece of graph paper, pencil, ruler, and follow these steps.
It is quite easy to graph a line. All you have to do is find a few points that satisfy the equation, and then draw a line through them.
Lets take the first equation... 2x + 3y = -17
and make up some values for x. Once we have choosen an x, we can calculate its cooresponding y.

If x = -2
Then 2(-2) + 3y = -17
-4 + 3y = -17
3y = -13
y = -13/4

If x = -1
then 2(-1) + 3y = -17
-2 + 3y = -17
3y = -15
y = -5

If x = 0
then 2(0) + 3y = -17
3y = -17
y = -17/3

If x = 1
then 2(1) + 3y = -17
2 + 3y = -17
3y = -19
y = -19/3

If x = 2
then 2(2) + 3y = -17
4 + 3y = -17
3y = -21
y = -7

Notice how some of the y's were fractions. It is difficult to graph a fraction. You can't be precise. Therefore, lets use (-1, -5) and (2, -7). Place a dot on these two points and then draw your line. This line is the graph of 2x - 3y = -17

Now try the same thing for the second equation...
Try what I did, make up some values for x and then determine what the cooresponding y would be.
Once you have graphed both lines, notice where they intersect. This intersection is the solution of the system of linear equations.

Wouldn't x=1 and y=-5?

2X + 3Y = 5xy
that means xy must be 12 so 5 + 12 = 17

don't know if its right but sounded good to me..lol

y=-2x/3-17/3

the question is not exactly solvable. i do know how to answer 2x+5=33 the answer would be 14

y=(17-2x)/3
x=(17-3y)/2
If you are going to solve for the unknown of x & y you would need 2 equations.

To solve that you need two equations. That is for sure. But if you asign values to X and Y and plot it, it will describe a line. It is a linear equation.
