It's Mardi Gras - French for "Fat Tuesday". Though it's grown into a longer event, it traditionally takes place on the day and night before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday begins Lent, which is supposed to be a period of humility. Mardi Gras was thus the last chance to party before 40 days of sacrifice. |

don't know about mardi grass, but mardi gras is a festival on the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent for Catholics. Translated it means 'Fat Tuesday', because for lent in the Middle Ages people gave up eating meat and dairy, as a penance. So they made very rich and fatty foods so those supplies would not go bad, and celebrated the last party before Easter. Now it's a big festival in New orleans, in addition to general partying before lent. (also big in Italy) |
