What is marketing?

Basically I'm asking this question to get other people's ideas of what marketing means to them. Before researching the subject, I thought marketing was simply advertising and promotions.

The poet poorly said that if someone built a better mousetrap then the world would beat a path to his door. It just doesn't happen that way.

When someone builds something they are expecting to sell the first question that usually arrives is, "Is there a market for that?" Could be that some others are already selling similar things. In that case, marketing is putting your product into that market of buyers and potential buyers in ways that would get them to consider buying yours. This is a sort of "Me too" marketing, although the marketing efforts are usually along the lines of "My thing's better than your thing" (sung to the tune of "My dog's better than your dog"). You want someone who knows about it to want yours.

If the answer to the question (Is there a market for this?) is no, then marketing is making one. The approaches are usually along the lines of "Isn't this interesting?", "Have you tried, considered, etc. this?", or "Wow! Watch this work!" You want someone to know about it. You want someone to want it..

Advertisement, of itself, is not marketing. Ads can be a "me too!" or "we're here!" thing. Ads can be informative. Ads can be entertaining, so much so that the product and company get lost. Comparing advertising to marketing is like comparing possibilities to probabilities. Anything is possible, but not everything is probable. For a company to advertise is one thing, to market is another. A politician who simply has yard signs that say "Smith" or "Jones" are going to gain name recognition, that is advertising. A politician that says "If you want smaller government, vote for Smith" or "If you want government that does positive things for people, vote for Jones"--that is marketing.

I had an insurance agency. In the phone book yellow pages I had a representation of my business card. That was advertising. When I sent people a letter, gave people a call, visited people in their office to see if my company's product touched on what their company needed--that was marketing. When I approached someone and they suspiciously say, "Now who are you?", then my advertising hasn't worked. When I approach someone and they recognize my name or my card, then I get a reception that a stranger does not get, my advertising has worked. I still don't know, neither do they, whether I have anything that helps them--that is where marketing comes in. When these work and people say, "I want that", which is sales, then that pays for advertising and marketing both.

Marketing is how or how you want to sell a product or service.

Business of selling things.

For instance using advertisement is a sort of marketing.
Special promotions and celebrity endorsements are all forms of marketting.

If it gets you to buy something, it's marketting.

The process of organizing and directing all the company activities which relate to determining the market demand and converting the customers buying power into an effective demand for a service and bringing that service to the customer.

marketing is everything you do to get your product/service sold
is not only about advertising, it has 4.. parts (marketings 4 p's)
Product - what you sell
Price - you don't only take the costs in consideration, but also your competitor's prices, and the status you wanna give to your product
Place - where will you sell it, make sure it will be available when needed (logistics involved here)
Promotion - advertising, word of mouth, coupons, etc., the funniest part hahahha

Marketing is a way of advertising your product to the general public by doing research and finding out what is the best area to target your product as well as the age range of customers you would like to purchase your product.

It's a UNIQUE strategy. There is a product in your and and there is a market seeking product so MARKETING is to find proper person to hand over proper product. It's about finding right person to hand over right product.
