You should ask for a banker´s draft. This is the same as cash in terms of its instant availability to the person who cashes it in. However, you can get your name put on it as the beneficiary, which would mean that if the buyer or you lost it, it could not be used by anyone without providing ID.
Another alternative would be to ask the person to pay you by bank transfer and get a private contract drawn up for them to the effects that they will irrevocably become the owner of the boat once the money has cleared into your account.
However, this option is probably a little more complicated than simply issuing a banker's draft (which they can order from their bank), though it does solve the problem if the person who is buying from you is not in the same country etc.

bankers drafts are just like postal orders and can be cashed right away. Costs vary for them - some banks charge £5.00 to draw them up .
You are right to be wary ! Most legit buyers will have thought of it anyway and wont want to carry large amounts of cash about. The other prob with cash is risk of it being dodgy money/counterfeit etc Good luck ! |
