What is the best business i can do in America?

Well, that's strictly a matter of what you enjoy. If you love something, you can make money doing it.

But for myself, if I had the money and had a car to go do it, I'd go around to estate sales and flea markets and buy up things that are relatively common in my area but hard to find elsewhere, and offer them on eBay. I am thinking especially about "collectibles," those hard-to-define treasures that pop up in estate sales especially because the estate was not left to anyone who knew how valuable they are or how to contact the other collectors of such stuff.

A modest amount of research will tell you generally what to look for, and a good eye for condition and quality of manufacture will go a long way. Research is very specialized for each type of collectible, and so you would want to start with things you already know something about, and branch out as you find things that look promising.

For example, I'm a doll collector. I have several reference books and doll collector magazines to inform me of the value of my purchases. But if I see a really charming figurine or old toy or game, and the price is quite low, I will buy it "on speculation" and look it up on eBay, or find other references. Perhaps that will lead me to information on other things to look for, perhaps to a magazine I can subscribe to for that category, etc.

This is a very hands-on, personal touch sort of business. If you had intended to be merely an investor, then scout out someone who has this desire (a classified ad might be enough), and stake them to the money they need to make those initial purchases. Or open a store selling collectibles in a large city or tourist destination, and let others find things and bring them to you. The significance of selling on eBay is that people from all over the world can bid on them, and American collectibles are probably more valuable in Europe than they are here.

If you have real money, make it antiques rather than the more generic term of collectibles. Again, specialization and information are the keys. Learn as much as you can about one area (antique dinnerware, for example), and then branch out onto the overlapping areas (glassware, silver tableware, etc.) until you have carved out an area of expertise large enough to satisfy you.

It may not add up to full time earnings, but have you thought about some of the online options? For example, as well as posting here I post at http://www.mylot.com/?ref=nancygibson which works the same way, but you get paid for every question or response or picture you post. Its made a very useful extra income for me and hardly seems like work at all. Just a thought if that might appeal at all.

If you are interest in a the best business to start in the United States today take a look this article at about.com http://sbinformation.about.com/od/bizopportunities/a/bestsmallbiz.htm that claims to have 94 different best ideas to start a small business today. I think they have some very valid arguments for what they are trying to convince you are great idea. However, the businesses you can start are the one(s) you already have knowledge of and/or an interest in - even if it isn't the most profitable - all that matters is that you are interested in doing it.

I would suggest after you get your business idea you then check out the Small Business Administration website for possible help http://www.sba.gov/ and possible find people who could mentor you at http://www.score.org/. You might even like to try out yahoo's venture capital site to find sources of money at http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/r-subCat-m-2-sc-55-finance_venture_capital-i or the National Venture Capital.org's website http://www.nvca.org/

Whatever you do good luck with it!!!
