The earths core is two part. A solid inner core made of iron and a liquid outer core. The outer core also contains iron and when it flows it creates a magnetic field. That is how the earth has a magnetic field. |

The earth has an inner and outer core. Both are composed primarily of nickel with significant iron and other trace elements. The exact composition is unclear because we can't get down there to sample it. Our evidence comes from the speed of seismic waves and the way that they reflect/refract off of the difference surfaces. The outer core is molten, while the inner core is sold. |
