Serving Jesus
 |
Sunday is the official first day of the week. It has been for thousands of years. We tend to think of the week as the work week, and the weekend, however. So for most people, Monday is more of the start of the week for them.
The reason we have weekends has to do with Christianity and Judaism. For Jews, their holy day, called the Sabboth, is Saturday. This is their holy day because God created the world in 6 days, and rested on the 7th day. So they, too rest. When Christianity came about people soon started making Sunday their day to come together to worship, because Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week. Because these two religions have had such an influence on our society, we have made these days of rest and worship, not work.
As we have moved more and more away from religion in our society we have also moved away from this practice. There used to be very few businesses at all that were open on Sunday, for example. Now almost any place that has a cash register is open 7 days a week! |
