There are different types of bridges, so it depends on the category of bridge you're asking about. The longest suspension bridge is in Japan, the Asashi Kaikyo Bridge. |

Windsor Bridge: The Longest in the World
It's hard to pass up an opportunity to pedal across the longest wooden bridge in the United States. The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge is the centerpiece of this ride, and a very impressive centerpiece it is. The ride as a whole is very flat and not quite as scenic as its proximity to the Connecticut River might suggest. The two Connecticut River crossings, however, are an experience to remember. You'll want to bring your camera on this one. Things to see: Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge, Connecticut River, town of Windsor, American Precision Museum, Old Constitution House, views of Mt. Ascutney. Terrain: flat.... |

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, also known in Japan as the Pearl Bridge, has a record main span of 1,991 meters. By comparison, the bridge is 366 meters (almost ¼ mile) longer than the previous record holder, the StoreBaelt (East Bridge) in Denmark, which was also opened in 1998. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is also 580 meters longer than the Humber Bridge in England, constructed in 1981; 692 meters longer than the longest suspension bridge in the United States, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York, built in 1964; and 710 meters longer than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, constructed in 1937.
It cost an estimated 500 billion Japanese yen (U.S. $3.6 billion) to build the bridge. Construction began in 1988 and involved more than 100 contractors |

According to the Guiness Book of World Records the Longest Bridge is Longest Bridge "The Second Lake Pontchartrain Causeway", which joins Mandeville and Metairie, Louisiana, USA, is 38.422 km (23 miles 1,538 yd) long. It was completed in 1969.
But as others have mentioned, there are several types of bridges. Longest Bridge Spans are categorised in the following tables according to the structural type of the main span. The "Span" means the main span of a bridge = centre to centre distance of adjacent towers, pylons, piers or supports given in metres. It does not mean the total length or overall length of multi-span bridges. If the lengths of several spans in one bridge are equal, it is mentioned in Notes column. Overall lengths are not included - only the longest spans.Year means the year of completion or intended completion if known.
The second website I listed gives you the longest bridge spans based on the type of bridge.
Suspension Bridges
The longest is the Akashi-Kaikyo bridge in Japan
Cable-Stayed Bridges
The longest is the Sutong bridge in China
Steel Arch Bridges
The longest is the Lupu bridge in China
Steel Truss Girder Bridges
The longest is the Pont de Quebec bridge in Canada
Concrete Arch Bridges
The longest is the Wanxian bridge in China
Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridges
The longest is the Shibanpo bridge in China
Steel Box/Plate Girder Bridges
The longest is the Ponte Costa e Silva bridge in Brazil
I listed all these here to hopefully explain all the different answers you have been receiving.
Good Luck! |

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
On April 5, 1998, 10 years after construction began, the ribbon was cut to open the world's longest suspension bridge, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan. Following a parade of the 1,500 invited guests (including this author) across the bridge, the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan officiated the formal ceremony.
Construction began in 1988 and involved more than 100 contractors
However, there are many other bridges that have come in first place for other things...
Confederation Bridge - Canada, world's longest bridge over waters that freeze
Lupu Bridge- China, longest single steel arch.
Mahatma Gandhi Setu - India, the longest river bridge in the world.
Québec Bridge - Canada, largest cantilever bridge in the world.
Tsing Ma Bridge - Hong Kong, the world's longest rail & road suspension bridge |
