A future-dated cheque is called a post-dated cheque. The date for the cheque is yet to come.

georgiegirl422
someone who doesn't have money in their account the day they write the check will often date their check a few days ahead when they know they will have the money.
most places will not accept these.

if you put a future date in place of today's date on a cheque that would be called as post-dated cheque...

It's when you put a future date on a check rather than that days date (for example if on the 15th of April you wrote a check and dated it the 30th of April you'd be postdating the check.)

This is generally done when you need to write a check but don't have funds in your bank account sufficient to cover the amount the check is worth-- say for example you needed to pay a rent check the day before you recieved a paycheck.

Putting future date in place of today's date on a cheque makes it a post dated cheque.

A post dated cheque means a cheque issued with some date after the date of issuing the cheque i.e. if you issue a cheque in my favour today on 4.4.07 with a date say 25.04.07, it will be a post dated cheque which can be encashed only on 25.04.07.

SK
cheques are dated for the coming period. for example one of your friend gave u cheque to day and as he has no money in the bank he put 1/05/07 as date. the bank will not accept this cheque because it is not current dated today or tomorrow, this type of cheque is called post dated cheques.

girlwhoknowsitstrue
Dating a cheque in advance of today's date. Beware though, a bank will accept it, so you may bounce it anyways.

NARSINGA RAO V
the cheque will come into force from that day but not before
the cheque will be taken by the party for safe side if there is no amount in account the person issued will be prosecuted
for that purpose post dated cheque will be taken by the parties

Post dated Cheque is a Cheque which can be encashed on a future date mentioned in the instrument. For example if you want to pay your installment dues on a particular date in a month, then you can issue a Cheque drawn on that date and issued in advance. That is called Post dated Cheque.

A cheque is nothing but the order given to your bank to pay the money to the person inwhose favour the cheque has been issued.

Date is one of the material information (amount in words & figures, name of beneficiary or drawee, signature of the drawer of issue) rto be provided on the face of the cheque.

The Cheque is normally given the date of issue.

In some cases, depending upon your convenience, (say goods are delivered tomorrow but the supplier wants cheque today itself or ...... you want to make payment tomorrow or in future),

then you can issue a cheque either dated tomorrow or any other date after tomorrow.
Such cheque is called a post-dated cheque.

In common mans parlance, it can be called as a cheque due for payment only in future.

The advantage in post-dated cheque is, you can assure payment only in future, depending on your conditions like good should be delivered.

Now it has a become a common practice by all the banks
to take post dated cheques from the borrower
when a loan is to be recovered in instalments.

The dates in future will coincide with the due date for repayments.

It is a negotiable instrument payable to the person whom you wish to pay to and be encashed to be encashed at the bank . It may also be"pay to cash" , meaning anybody can encash it. It may as well be addressed to the payee but subject for deposit at the bank for clearing purpose. However if it is post dated check, you can transact it at the bank only on date indicated therein which maybe on a later date.
