They regularly charge 99cents because the mass population are stupid enough to think because it has the word; "CENTS" in it, they are saving a lot of money. it wouldn't really change anything if they just hit the dollar or a flat 95cents, or 80cents etc. people think small when it comes to money and saving. They ignore to see the big picture of the Advertisers etc. for example;
just say there is a bag of bananas for $1.99 in a country like Australia. (Australia doesn't have 1 or 2 cent coins) so you buy the bag thinking you got it for $1, when in fact upon checkout... you paid a full $2, the extra 1 cent they keep. now imagine 1 million people giving one cent you you freely without thinking you won't gain, after all... it's only 1 cent right?

Just think how much these Grocery Stores are cashing in with every person throwing in about 1 or 2 cents each time they shop for just a bottle of milk or things like that. Of course you can use it to your advantage, but sadly most people never care about 1 cent. |

You have some good answers here and although they make sense they are not the real reason which is....
If goods were priced at $1.00 (say) customers may offer a $1 bill, or even 4 x 25c.
There could be a temptation from some dishonest employees to simply pocket the cash as typically the customer will just walk away having paid for the goods.
The customer would be unaware that the sale had not gone through the till and the assistant could walk away with the money undetected.
Making the price 99c however means that a customer will usually wait for the 1c change which means that the cashier will need to ring up the sale to get access to the change.
This is a fraud prevention measure. The business loses just 1c rather than potentially the whole dollar |

its just a marketing technique so that the product does not look costly, like 299 instead of 300, its like playing with the consumers mind.For example when I go out shopping I wont pick up shoes I really like coz the prize is 500 but the same pair will look more desirable with a 499 or 459 price tag. |
