My immediate thought when I read your question was the sight of my nephew's body on a hospital's stainless steel medical table.

My brother lost his 4 year old boy last May. Watching the pain the family has gone through has been so tough. I can't fathom the pain my brother has gone through.

My mother lost her husband (my father) to cancer 16 years ago and she says her grandson's death was the worst she's ever been through. That's probably because she blames herself. (Long story) Also, because, even though my Dad's life was cut short, he did have a very full life.

I guess the worse would be a parent who blames themself for the death of their little child.

*PS* "Pretty Lady" has a point. My father had a twin & his twin's death (7 years before his) was the worse thing he had ever been through. I still think the loss of a child is worse, but when you are going through that kind of pain, "But it's not the worse that could have happened" is not much comfort.

I would imagine, the loss of a child.

There are many sad things: poverty, homelessness, displaced people, death, someone cheating on you, and on and on.

Losing a child.

the word sad itself is the saddest thing...

I agree with the others on the loss of a child but I have to add in the abuse of animals and children.

Losing a loved one is clearly a sadness nearly unmatched. However sadness can lead to a stronger person. Others have considered similar thoughts:

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. – Ecclesiastes VII, 3, 200 BCE

I will instruct my sorrows to be proud. – Shakespeare: King John, III, 1596.

There is no wisdom in useless and hopeless sorrow; but there is something in it so like virtue that he who is wholly without it cannot be loved, nor will by me at least be thought worthy of esteem. - Samuel Johnson: Letter to Hester Thrale, 12 April 1781.

Come then sweet Sorrow!
Sweetest Sorrow!
Like an own babe I nurse thee on my breast:
I thought to leave thee
And deceive thee,
But now of all the world I love thee best.
- John Keats: Endymion, 1818

Actually - to not care at all - about anything.

When someone has a loss of a loved one (child or otherwise) there is a shared sadness among the freinds and family. There still is a connection that is felt and passed along.

When the is a lack of care about anything - then it becomes a all consuming void which will not let any "shared" feeling to penetrate it.
It is a disconnetion of any feelings at all.

That is the most saddest thing I can think of.

Mr. Curious
Loss of a spouse far exceeds loss of a child. The loss of a child, when married, allows someone for you to find comfort with. The loss of a spouse leaves you alone with NO ONE to commiserate with.

Hi! I'm Steve!
My sympathies to you & your family.

If you lose your identical twin. Mine is truly my other half. We share DNA and our souls. I think I could handle losing a child easier than losing her. Losing my mother at 11 was hard but nowhere close to just the thought of losing my Twin sister. I feel we are meant to outlive our parents and subsequently be able to handle it. I got over it. I don't think I could get over the sadness of losing my best friend, buddy and lifelong pal. My answer is losing my identical twin.

Feeling the pain of your grandchildren looseing thier mother without her being gone, Just because she wanted to have fun. Thier are no words that I have found to make them feel better. The pain in thier eyes is more than I can bare. So I guess it would probly be looseing a mother. For young children anyways.
Why do you want to know? Are you getting ready for heart a break of your own or someone elses?

Animal abuse, if i could, i would take care of all the abused animals in the world! they are just so sweet and innocent!
also... i think it would be sad to have been "accidently responsible" for someone's death. not responsible but when you blame yourself, like your driving the car when it gets into a crash and you live but your partner doesn't. Abused/homeless children too!
I wish I could just take away everyones pain and suffering!

There can be several answers to this question. But for me it would have to be losing the one and only true love of your life. That could be a friend, relative or animal which is my case.

dj_j65
To me it is if you lose something you really love or like.
