A leap year is a year with one extra day inserted into February, the leap year is 366 days with 29 days in February as opposed to the normal 28 days. (There are a few past exceptions to this)
Leap years are needed so that the calendar is in alignment with the earth's motion around the sun.
It takes 365.2422 days for the earth to make one revolution around the sun (the time is takes to orbit the sun).
Using a calendar with 365 days would result in an error of 0.2422 days or almost 6 hours per year. After 100 years, this calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the seasons (tropical year), which is not a desirable situation. It is desirable to align the calendar with the seasons, and make the difference as small as possible.
By adding leap years approximately every 4th year, this difference between the calendar and the seasons can be reduced significantly, and the calendar will follow the seasons much more closely than without leap years. |

The year is based on one Earth revolution around the Sun. It revolves around the Sun every 365 and 1/4 days. So, that's why our year is 365 days. But that extra quarter will add up and pretty soon, the year will be off. So, every four years we add one day at the end of February to keep it accurate.
Actually, it's 365.26 days. The quarter takes care of most of it, but we do have leap seconds every once in a while to offset that extra 0.01. |

A leap year (or intercalary year) is a year containing an extra day or month in order to keep the calendar year in sync with an astronomical or seasonal year. Seasons and astronomical events do not repeat at an exact number of days, so a calendar which had the same number of days in each year would over time drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting (or intercalating) an additional day (February 29th) into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year which is not a leap year is called a common year.

All I know is that they come every four years. I think they do that to balance something out. Feb has 29 years everyfour years. Can you imagine if you were born on Feb. 29th. You will have a birthday every four years. Pretty cool. Hope I answered your question. |

Every 4 years, 1 day must be added to the calendar, so every 4th year they add Feb 29th. |

every 4 years (because of the rotation of the earth) we add an extra day to Febuary. Every year it is 365 1/4 days and every 4 years it would equal 4/4 which would be one day. and we add it to Febuary becaus it only has 28 days. before we had leap years we started having winter in summer and summer in winter. |

every 4 years a day is added to feb. making it 29 days instead of 28.this is because feb is B.H.M. and the shortest month of the yr.so every 4 yrs. we get an extra day so we won't complain about having the shortest month. :) |

Leap years are when one day is added to February. Since the "year" as we know it is 365.25 days long, every four years there is an extra day, and since February is so short, the Powers that be add an extra day to it: February 29th, aka Leap Day. Does that help?

A Leap year is where in febuary, there is 1 more day in every 4 years, so every 4 years there is 1 more day added in febuary! so regularyly its 28 days but when the 4 years come arround there is 29 days in febuary! |

a full year is 365.25 days. A full year is considered how long it takes the earth to revovle completely around the sun. Leap year adds 1 extra day every four years in order to compensate for the additional .25 (.25 x 4 = 1 full day) Its easy! |
