The egg. Invertibrates had been laying them for thousands of years before chickens ever walked the earth. |

It would have to be the chicken. Eggs don't incubate themselves. If any bird leaves a nest unattended the eggs will get too cold at night and will die, what with the sun being on the other side of the planet and assuming something doesn't eat them beforehand. |

The first eggs were laid by insects. The chicken came 1600 years later |

Isn't this question the same as asking which came first, the Acorn or the Oak Tree?
If the egg came first, it would be in worse shape than the Acorn, which could develop into an oak tree without a hen sitting on it!~lol!~
Reason would have me believe the chicken came first, laid the egg, and had more chicks. |

Well...it would have been a teeny little organism that evolved into a chicken that produced an egg! |

It would be the chicken no matter what your belief. A creator would have created the chickens, which would have then laid eggs All creation stories involve the creation of live creatures instead of eggs. If you like evolution, then it is the chicken first again. Eggs would have been a mutation on the reproduction of chickens. |

assuming the question is,"who came first the CHICKEN egg or the chicken"...it`s so clear the chicken came first.Eggs, like someone has stated once and I keep telling my friends, cannot keep themselves warm. |

THE EGG BUT IT WAS CREATED BY GOD |

The egg came first. We know that chickens evolved from some earlier, non-chickenoid form of life, e.g., the half-bird, half-reptile Archaeopteryx. These non-chickens, however, arrived in eggs. Ergo, eggs were on the scene before chickens. |

i don't know i think they both came at the same time because, if the egg cam efirst then where was the chicken that created the egg???????????????????????????

the egg cause different animals were laying eggs millions of years before chickens, but if it was what was firts? chicken or chicken egg? I'd have to say chicken cause the chicken whould evolve and then lay the egg. |

The chicken, because god created the chicken and then the chicken layed the egg, so the chicken definitly came first! |

The chicken came first. God created all the animals in the world, there is no mention of him creating egs and waiting for them to hatch. |

First the joke answer:
--------------------------------------...
A chicken and egg are lying in bed. The chicken is smoking a cigarette, a satisfied smile on his face. The egg is frowning and looking a little ticked.
After a moment, the egg turns to the chicken and mutters, 'Well, I guess we finally answered that question.'
--------------------------------------...
Now the real answer:
Definitely the egg!
Assuming that a chicken evolved from a more primitive creature that was different enough to not be classified as a chicken, but still an egg laying creature, then the first actual chicken was the offspring of one of these creatures and came from one of its eggs. It's unlikely that this first chicken was born live (not from an egg) but somehow developed the characteristic of laying eggs, and even if it did, then this characteristic would probably have developed over time and until it did, the creature would not have really been able to be classified as a chicken as the classical definition of a chicken includes the characteristic of being an egg layer.
Yes, I am a geek and put too much thought into that... but you asked! ;) |

Since we weren't there, it is hard to PROVE the answer to this question.
If we trust written documents that might give us insight, then we could read those documents and make a judgement based on those writings. ... I don't know if they had time or inclination to write about that though lol |

most likely the egg came from a prehisoric fish, and out popped the mutant freek we now know as the chicken |

Here's my answer, cut and paste from my answer to the same question asked the other day:
There were eggs long before chickens.
Dinosaurs laid eggs, for example, and birds evolved from dinosaurs.
Guess what, a chicken is a bird.
Whatever bird chickens evolved from laid eggs, so wherever you draw the line in the sand and say "here was the first chicken", well, that chicken had a mother who laid the egg.
Eggs came before chickens. |
