What would happen if I didn't know that the price of a postage stamp went up so I mailed the letter and then
realized that the price of a stamp went up. I didn't put a return address on so would it still get sent to the place or what would happen to the letter. Would the person getting the letter have to pay for it then....or what would happen???

I used to work for the po. the letter would go to the person addressed and they would have to pay the difference.

k h
If you sent it do a personal address that person will be asked for the two cents. If they don't pay it the letter would go to the dead letter office. Sometimes your own mailman will put up the two cents but, that is rare. Call who ever you mailed it to and see if they got it.

Yes the receiver would have to pay the "postage due" it will only be the difference. There is a good chance that they will forget about the couple of cents and just give the mail to the recevier. Remember to put a return address.

In Hiding
Not sure where you live, but in Canada, a notice would be given to the recipient that there is a letter at the post office waiting for them with postage due. They can choose to refuse it in which case it would be destroyed.

Well Believe it or not Postal Agencies have considered this eventuality and they have made rules about it, If the senders address can be established it will be returned,Insufficient Postage, If not then the recipient will have to pay the due amount before delivery can be executed, No mail will ever be destroyed by the postal services

Do your own homework!
If there was a return address it would be returned to you, if there was no return address they would send it on with postage due. If the person wanted to pay the rest of the postage they would hand over the letter(I think they will get a slip and have to pick it up at the post office), if not they would destroy it. Sometimes they just get lazy and deliver it anyway. Last week I got a card stamped postage due, but they never put an amount or tried to collect. (Square cards require extra postage)

They will send it back to you for you to put more postage on it OR they will just put the extra postage on it and mail it out. That's why you should always put a return address on all your letters.

streezaleodejanero
It might come back insufficient postage.

it would be destroyed

One of any of the things you said could happen. It could go to the dead letter file because there is no return address. It could go for postage due from your friend. If your friend doesn't get the letter in a week or so, you could phone the postoffice where your friend's mail comes from and ask about the letter.

sometimes they send it anyway but sometimes they put a note on your mail piece and put it back in the mail so you can later put some more postage on it

Go to your local post office. they will weigh the letter and charge you by weight and mail it.

(this is just a guess)i think if it was like a week or so after the price of stamps went up, they would mail it...if its later then that then (without the return address) i think they would keep it somewhere in the post office, there might even be a chance that you could get it back, if it was important...always put a return address

if there is no return address, and the improper postage fee, then odds are the letter will be either held at the local post office for x amount of time, or will be destroyed and forgotten. sorry for the bad luck, hope it was nothing important. next time, always try to place a return, so if you do fail the place the correct postage, it will get kicked back to you, and you can purchase the additional postage. good luck

There's a good chance it will get to it destination.
I read some were that the old stamps can be used till they run out.

probably so

The addressee would never see it. It would come back to you if you put your return address on it. If not, kiss it goodbye.
