What would you do if you got money taken out of your pay without prior notice?
Money was taken from everyone in job, without prior notice. Our money gets deposited on Thursday if we have direct deposit, and we didn't know our boss took out money til that Friday? It doesn't state in contract that they can do this. What would you recommend me to do? Go to the boss or go to Equal Opportunity Office to see my limitations? Or any suggestions would be nice. Thanks:)

Okay, money was taken out for helmet, and vest. I work for a contracting job and in our contract it doesnt say we had to pay any fee's to work for them. I have been with them for a year, others more than 18 and we all got charged 20 dollars. Now first of all the equipment is government owned, it can not be sold by our contracting agency. They were provided for by the agency we work at.
No one was given prior notice on the money being taken out. If our boss would have supplied it and we signed it then it would be lagitament but I didn't sign anything where the boss can just take out money when ever he wants to for what he says its for...
Any suggestions?

I would go to my boss and ask why the money was taken out. I would also ask him as a courtesy to please notify me in advance if my paycheck was going to be short for any reason so as not to screw up my bill payments and other expenses.

If I was not happy with my boss's answer, I would hire a lawyer and claim that I was constructively dismissed.

Then I would sue the company.

Always go to the boss first. Ask for a reason and if needed a copy of the charges.
If you don't get an answer by the next paycheck, then go to your state wage and hour division.

1st ask your boss about this. If you are not satisfied with answer, call the Wage and Hour People - Department of Labor.

onslow_77
i would go postal on there a*s!!

fdrsnail
First, talk to the boss. If he/she can't explain why money was taken out w/o your prior knowledge, then go to EO office & see if someone there can tell you if it's legal for them to do this. Ask to see it in writing. Good luck!!

I WOULD CALL THE HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT (HR) AND ASK THEM WHAT IS GOING ON - ASAP!!!

Wanna-Be
The first and foremost place and department to go into is the Payroll Department and/or the Human Resource Department.

Asked what is the deduction(s) all about, you may also asked your co -employees if they also got the same deductions.

If you find it unusual or you suspected there is something bad or illegal going on, then you can always call for information to the appropriate department the deduction is related to: (For USA, will be IRS and EDD and Department of Labor)

jannie
you don't say what the money was for
perhaps it was for a legitimate reason

Well, it kindof depends what the deductions are for, but if it isn't for something legitimate, I'd contact your local labor board, or union if your industry has one.

cherryred64gto
First of all, you could've already had outstanding checks mailed out against that money so shorting you could cost you bounce fees. Second of all, what was the money taken out for? I know you can get a free consultation from many lawyers. I would talk to a labor lawyer. You could try talking to your boss first, if you think it will help. I doubt you have a union or you would've already taken that route. I would complain and insist on a return of the money if it was not something you agreed to. I don't think they can take money from you without notice or permission. If you don't get results with your boss try the lawyer or the labor board. Good Luck.

I would sue the company for making deductions from your paycheck. I would hire an attorney or a lawyer to make a case. However, if you signed a contract when you first started that said deductions may be made from your paycheck without notice, then you can't really build any case.

NOT ONLY GO TO EQUAL, ALSO GO SEE A LAWYER, HAVE YOUR LAWYER CONTACT YOUR BOSS.

squares
i would threaten to report them. what was their reasoning for taking it? you should call workforce services and see what your options are.. you're not an independent contractor are you?
