When prospective employers ask what you're weaknesses are, should I mention my shyness?
My lack of assertion and shyness really does fall into the 'my weaknesses' category. Do you think this is what they're asking for in 'describing your weaknesses?'

arklatexrat
I have been told that the answer to that question should be something that your employers really won't see as a weakness but as a strength. Something like---"I'm such a perfectionist that I will keep at a project until I get it just right."
"I am honest to a fault", etc.
I've also been told that it's in how you "spin" it--don't lie, or make up a trait you don't possess, but take something that really is true for you and "spin" it in such a way that it comes across positive. For your "shyness" trait, you might say something like, "Well, I'm really not into all the office water cooler chatter, and making small talk with fellow employees---I'd much prefer to sit quietly at my desk and focus on my work." You've sort of alluded to your shyness, but you've framed it in such a way that it is probably a + for your employer.
Now if you are applying for a customer service or sales-type job that requires initiating conversations and/or oral presentations, this trait could present some problems--you either need to do some personal growth/training in this area, or look for a job that is less dependent on people skills.

Hope that helps!

always turn that question into a positive. Say something like i sometimes lack assertiveness however i am working hard on overcoming this and believe i have improved in recent years. This shows that you are both aware of your problem but also looks good because you solving it.

Rico
No don't mention it unless it can be truned into a positive.. Only mention weakness that have the potential to be something else. You'll only stonewall yourself if you tell them about genuine weaknesses like that. I'm sure, however that you can find something positive out of that?

Lack of assertion could become good listener? Follows instructions to the book?

Shyness could mean that you work extremely well on your own?

Just play around with the words and you'll get there.

I would say you should always mention a weakness, even if its something like perfection or nothing

It lets them know you are human and if you get the job will give them something to work on

jed slade
They will see this at your interview, you only need to know that nothing in life is personal, once you can think this way ,you will have no trouble asserting yourself,if you include your feelings into any social equation you are dead.Make it impersonal,as though it is happening to someone else, and you will be ahead of the game.Best of luck, and remember, bite their legs.

Never say that you have no weaknesses (no-ones perfect!). The idea is to mention something that could possibly be negative if looked at in a certain way, but twist it round into a positive.

Shyness is not a good example to use so i wouldn't mention that. Perhaps say you are cautious and may appear shy and quiet at first but this is because you like to take time to suss out situations to be sure of the best course of action.

The usual reply for 'describe your weaknesses' is
'im a perfectionist and i like to get things how i want them, i can become frustrated if presented with obstacles, but i am determined and will work at it until i am satisfied'

Don't worry too much about this, it will not have a huge effect on your application.

RT(R)
when they ask this, make something up that makes you sound good. like say..i tend to over focus on a task, or something like a 'i work too hard' 'weakness'. never give them a REAL weakness-

Goldiggar
no because they might want u to speak in a meeting or present a presentation and it might be included in ur duty, so they might reject ur application

Leanna
say that your shy at first untill you get to know people

When employers ask you a question like that it's always best to tell them something that has a positive side as well. It would be better to tell them that your a fast worker and that sometimes you don't review things as well as they should be and that might be your biggest weakness. I would not tell them about your shyness and definitely do not tell them that you lack assertion. Good Luck!

pinkribbon
They may well pick up on the fact that you are shy by your body language.I was very shy when I was younger, but when I have wanted things like a job I have forced myself to overcome it.It's not easy, but if you want something enough, you can do anything.
If you do mention your shyness, mention it in the past tense.Say you used to be quite shy but working with different people is helping you overcome it.Best of luck, I know you can do it.

stevabeth
No, I wouldnt mention that as it will really put off employers. When asked what your weaknesses are try and think of something that can be turned into a positive as well, dont lie but you can stretch the truth slightly.
For example in interviews I say my weaknesses are that I can be quite chatty, however this can then be turned into a positive as this chattiness can help build relationships with customers and colleagues and make people feel at ease.
You could say that sometimes you prefer to work on your own rather than in large groups, the positive of this is that you can work using your own initiative and without supervision.

Never use the words: "lack of assertion". A prospective employer will most likely view you as being a "slacker". Without using the words "my shyness", it would be best stated in a way such as: "I have a tendency to get very nervous if or when I have to give a speech or presentation to a large group of people that I don't know, but I've been trying to work on this." That statement tells the prospective employer that although you are WILLING to perform this particular duty, and are perfectly capable of doing it, that it doesn't matter if you've done it 1,000 times before, you still get nervous. This is simply telling him/her that you are a HUMAN BEING. Another way you may want to answer any question about your "weaknesses" would be to keep it strickly related to the job you are applying for such as (let's take accounting, for example), you might want to say: " I consider a slight weakness in the fact that, although I know and have worked with (Quicken, Excel, Peachtree, etc.--whatever applies), I can't say I'm a "speed-demon" at it yet just due to lack of exposure."

Finally, and I would say this is pretty obvious--DON'T APPLY for ANY job such as in customer service, sales, receptionist, etc., where you MUST be inter-acting with new and different people every day. Jobs such as this require the basic "A"-type of personality, and they are not for everyone. If you feel uncomfortable (say, with large groups of people), try to keep your job search to the smaller, more personal setting rather than HUGE corporations. If YOU are happy in your job setting, your performance will be much higher. Hope these little tips help you. Good luck.

It depends on what type of job you are applying for. If the job requires you to meet people or give presentations then this "weakness" may present problems for you and if you were to tell an employer they may perhaps not employ you for that reason - however if you will be in a small team say as an administrator then shyness will not be a disadvantage. Why would an employer be looking for weaknesses I would have thought they would be better looking at your strengths. I would also say that being assertive can be a disadvantage in certain circumstances so would that really be categorised as a "weakness" in relation to the job for which you are applying. God luck anyway I hope it turns out for what you want.

MPatrinos
With this question, a prospective employer is wanting to see how well you know yourself, that you recognise you aren't perfect and what you are trying to do to improve.

So, shyness, or lack of assertiveness is good one, though you should also explain how you try and address it i.e. you've taken a course in the last few months, you seek suppport from your team when having to communicate with people you don't know etc.
You could also say that a reason for applying for this job is that you'd like to work on this and see opportunities for doing so in this role. Try and make your answer relevant to the post.

Your answer also depends on the job itself. If it envolves a lot of contact with people you don't know then they may not think you are suitable for the role.

jackie m
Don't say you are shy - tell them you like to be quiet until you evaluate other people, lack of assertion will make them think you are very lazy, tell them you have no weaknesses and you enjoy meeting people. You could maybe joke and say your only weakness is ...you eat too much chocolate or whatever, that will let them see you have a personality.

rebecca.suter
no, tell them you have no weaknesses.
