raising min. wage will only raise those prices even more, and cut jobs
instead of going on strike how about work towards a better job, a minimum wage job is not meant to support a family |

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but the minimum wage will never be decent. It's called minimum for a reason.
Hopefully, its a jumping off point. Once you have some sort of job history, and perhaps experience, you can go for a higher paying job.
Good luck to you, and Happy New Year. |

"Minimum wage" will never be a "decent" wage, and no-one is supposed to earn minimum wage for more than their first few months or years in the workforce.
If you have been in the workforce for more than a year, and are still earning minimum wage, it's not the fault of "the system", it's your fault. Work harder. Get a better job. Study. Get smarter. Get a better job.
Very few "working class" earn minimum wage after their first year on the job, and those that do are doing a poor job, refuse to learn or apply themselves, or are just being lazy.
Think about it, even folks that work at a burger joint or stack shelves at a supermarket can earn better than minimum wage if they do a good job!
No country will ever collapse if "minimum wage" workers go on strike, they will simply be replaced by immigrants who are willing to work harder without complaining. But don't worry, the striking workers will all get their jobs back when the immigrants get promoted to positions of more responsibility! |

Never, the minimum wage was set up to be pay for minimum type jobs. If you are a teenager and making that, good for you, it's good to have your own money, if you are in your 20's or older, not going to school and still making minimum, go back to school, get an education and get a job that pays much better. |

There appears to be 3 answers, to your questions: Ans1. With the latest influx of new EU,ns. The minimum wage, to them is a lottery/pools win, so don,t expect an increase. Ans2: The rich insist everything goes up in price. How you going to stop the poor, from becoming rich, if you don,t? Ans3: Lets assume that by the term "Working Class", we are thinking British/English, as you don,t seem to hear it overseas. The English/British don,t rebel. The yell a bit, but that,s it. |

An awful lot of companies use the minimun wage as an excuse to pay low wages, particularly large retail stores that make millions. |

It is a good question.. but the truth is so multi-dimensional as to get lost in the details...
For those screaming, "get an education".. the system can not get any better.. if everyone was a way over educated brainiac...
There will always be people needed to collect garbage, flip 'burgers, answer the telephones, et cetera... for all these people to be over educated is downright unjustifiable...
The system is geared to screw someone...
Someone is going to get paid slave wages for what they do!
-------------------------
If minimum wage were say $100 an hour.. a single loaf of bread would easily be $30, $60, or even $90 dollars...
Prices will systematically seek their new equilibrium levels. |

Never. It was never intended to be. It is suppose to be a starting point for inexperienced workers. What you are suppose to do is get an education or learn a skill so you aren't stuck in a minimum wage job all your life. People have become use to an entitlement government, giving them things that they haven't earned. Someday, I hope, folks will go back to the old ways of self-sufficiency and personal responsibility and take care of themselves instead of expecting someone else to take care of them. |

The reason this never happens is because the working class always let themselves down by being self centred, self serving, ill educated Sun readers.
There never has been a Conservative government in this country that was not elected by the working class...that is how stupid they are.
You think I sound irritated by this? I am! I am a trade union officer. |

Are you familiar with the term "erosion of differentials"?
If the minimum wage goes from say £4.50 to £5 per hour, that's an increase of 11.1% . My pay would need to rise not by 50p per hour, but by 11.1% to retain the parity between me and the other recipient, and you can bet that 11.1% is far more than 50p on my rate of pay.
Now I'm not greedy, but you have to understand that there are differences in pay rates which are governed not by inflation, but by age, experience and qualifications. If you want better than the minimum, you have to be worth it! |

exactly what swenjii said. look for other work. why are you reliant on the government ? you need to do for yourself - be independent. be more proactive. get some education if you have to. stop waiting for the government to save you. jeez ! |

Firms who pay minimum wage do so because there are lots of people who will take the job - unskilled or manual eg shop work, cleaning. The more specialist you are, the higher wage you can demand. Experience and education is the way out.
And be glad there is a minimum wage, its not been around that long. When I was a child blah blah ........................................... |
